Slang Word of the Day

Two words I learned recently:

"bama"

"mean" - That's mean

Who knows what they mean?

Re: Slang Word of the Day

  • Yeah Bama definitely means country/hick, short for Alabama (pretty obvious, which I am sure you knew).

As for mean, you'll have to give it to me in an actual conversation because when you say "That's mean", it just looks like someone is saying something wasn't very nice.

  • Wow, kids are still using "bama"?  It was used a lot when I was in jr high/HS.  More in a playful way, though.  "Don't be such a bama" aka loser, nerd, b*tch, etc.

I'm guessing they're using "mean" in the same way people say, "That's sick!" or "That's badasss!" ?

  • Yeah, that's mean is like "that's badass" - it's a compliment, apparently!

Bama has evolved a little to mean someone with bad style, not necessarily someone from the country.

Ditto. We were saying that in the 90's ..geeze the kids are falling behind in their slang updates

  • I don't think I've ever heard anyone use the term 'bama.' Hmm.

  • I heard my students saying "bama" when I started teaching, but we didn't use it when I was in school.

Hearing someone call something "mean" was new - I asked what it meant.
