Re: Jamaica?

  • It was okay...it was nice, but not quite what I had in mind.  I keep meaning to write a full review and put it in my blog and I just haven't gotten around to it...maybe Sunday if I survive my race.

We did a Sandals resort and it was pretty nice, but I just don't think I can do the all inclusive route for that long again...we were there for 7 days.  We missed out on seeing the REAL Jamaica and after 4 days I felt trapped on the resort.  The weather wasn't so great either...it was windy and rainy so we couldn't do any boat excursions, and they were pretty expensive even if we could do them.  The cab drivers took advantage of you and really overcharged.

BUT I still had a good time...it was very relaxing.  There was literally nothing to do besides lay around, eat and drink.  I got through two good sized books.  Next time we're going to limit the AI route to 4-5 days though.  And I got steel drum lessons!  THat was a huge highlight!  Now I'm trying to figure out how to buy/learn them in ABQ.

We're going to do Grand Caymen Island next year, minus the AI.  Mike found this little inn that includes a car rental in the cost of the room and it includes a kitchen.  I'm 99% sure that's what we're going to do.  I just couldn't handle being somewhere new w/o actually experiencing the culture of that place.  It drove me nuts.  Definietly doing Jamaica again though!

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

Where in Jamaica did you guys end up?

I know how you feel about AIs.  I did field work in Jamaica back in college and we spent a week in several AIs around the island.  I really hated that a lot of the AIs told you not to go on the beach at night and were gated off.  I had a blast in the field - we got to hike through the Blue Mountains, traipse across the karst outside of Negril, go hang out in teh mountains, etc.  When we were off the AIs the folks were so friendly.  And we had teh best food at the random off-hoghways hole-in-the-walls:  fried and curried conch, the cook akee fruit scrambles, etc.

Glad you two got some relaxation in.

For steel drums, they ocassioanlly have drumming classes at Maple Street Studio down here near UNM.  Not sure if they have steel drums, though.  When Pearl of the Carribean was open as an art gallery they had steel deum jam sessions.

  • Good to hear that you had a relaxing time, even if it wasn't quite what you were expecting.

Duff, When is the next race for you, anyways?
  • It was actually this morning.  :)

I did the Jay Benson Triathlon.  It was my first and it was fun... I was very unprepared.  Between work, exam and the injury, I didn't train at all.  I finished in 1:45 and some change, but I was estimating 2 hours so I'm pleased.  I don't have times for each event, but they did post my run time and it was just over 40 mins...my best ever is 37:00 and that was a month after my marathon in cooler weather, so I'm pretty happy w/the 40:00.  I think I did ok on my bike too, but I don't have the time yet.  Swimming's always been my strong point, so that wasn't anything I was worried about, but I still want to see my time.

I'd like to see 15 mins cut off, but I know it needs to come out of my run and I'm not sure I'm capable of that.  We'll see though.

I'm very, VERY anxious to hear about Diamond's race next week though!

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

Oh, and we were in Montego Bay...and gracias for the drum info.  I'll keep my ears open.

We'll do Jamaica again, and I think we're talking about Negril for next time.  I didn't mind MoBay at all, but I know some people have issues w/the city.  There are sketchy people everywhere though, and as long as you're aware of what's going on around you, you're fine.  Hell, if I wander into some places in ABQ I know to keep my eyes open.

Obviously I recently got into the whole "I can't believe you'd go somewhere so dangerous again" argument with a friend.

Oh yes, the infamous, "But it's SSSOOOO dangerous."  Yeah, there are places in ABQ, Santa Fe, Silver City, etc. that aren't thta safe either.

I really loved Negril..  Especially if you go up near teh Rock House - this cool little B&B style place.  Gorgeous beaches, awesome snorkeling and so darn quiet and peaceful.

Congrats on that first triathalon. 1:45 is pretty good.
