SF to LA Car rental? Need help

Hello ladies!

I dont post often but was hoping you might be able to help me. Me and H are planning on taking the Amtrack to SF and renting a car to drive back down the coast in Dec. Only problem is everyone is charging crazy fees to drop off the car at a differnt location (Hertz $200, Thrifty $500, etc.) on top of the rental car price.

Any ideas? Has anyone done this before, any places that dont charge fees or ways to get around? Thanks...

Re: SF to LA Car rental? Need help

  • It's always way more expensive for a one way rental. Maybe see if AAA is offering any deals?
  • Yay Congrats! :-)
  • sorry about the above post...and it won't let me delete..I was congratulating Rachel being here!

  • I have heard that some places will not charge the drop off fee if you pick up and drop off at airport locations. My in laws have done that in which they picked up at LAX and dropped off at Ontario and were not charged the fee. Not sure though if maybe they waived the fee since the distance was not that far. Something to look into though.

Try Budget.  Last year I rented from them and they had the lowest rate.

  • I had good luck with Avis for a one-way dropoff. You should also check out priceline.com - it lets you put in the dates and location of pickup and dropoff- you might have some luck there too!
