Austin had a "riot" the other day. There is alot of crap that goes on here that just astounds me. Bars shut down during Texas Relay weekend, etc
I guess what I'm asking wondering - I really don't remember DFW having a bunch of deep rooted racism/prejudice. Was I living in LaLa land??
Here is the article

Re: Someone enlighten me
that is interesting.. the times I visit Austin, the people seem much more progressive and more accepting of things in general, does that make sense?
What neighborhoods are you talking about? I mainly hang out and stay around the S.co area (closer to downtown), so maybe that helps.
This is interesting to me. We're moving to Austin this summer and I really didn't realize this was such an issue. What are the times or areas that it seems most prevalent?
Off the top of my head, I'm not really thinking of things like this (racial incidences) that occur often. Maybe I'm just clueless about it-that's probably the case. It seems like most of the violence I hear about it either break-in related or specifically aimed at a person/group of people (maybe gangs?)
To me superficially Austin is a progressive town. I think that has to mostly do with the transplants from various parts of the states/western europe.
But after living here for awhile and meeting alot of natives, seeing how the town is naturally segregated the people seem alot more maybe not racist but definately prejudiced if that makes any sense.
Several businesses and a mall shut down during Texas Relay - just bc it was Texas Relay and the "type of people it brought"
And I'm not saying this is a bad town or people run around using the N word, etc etc at all - its just something I've noticed.
In that that article it lists several cop shootings where race issues where in question - and the officer was fired.
Well, in Dallas, we recently had the lovely officer who denied the Houston Texan football player entrance into the hospital as his mil was dying, despite hospital staff and even another police officer begging him to let the guy go. This made national news. I am sure there are many others.
