Someone enlighten me

Austin had a "riot" the other day.  There is alot of crap that goes on here that just astounds me.  Bars shut down during Texas Relay weekend, etc

I guess what I'm asking wondering - I really don't remember DFW having a bunch of deep rooted racism/prejudice.  Was I living in LaLa land??

Here is the article

Re: Someone enlighten me

  • I should clarify - I KNOW there was some; but really there are times/neighborhoods that it gets really tense here - the atmosphere strikes me as different
  • that is interesting.. the times I visit Austin, the people seem much more progressive and more accepting of things in general, does that make sense?

What neighborhoods are you talking about? I mainly hang out and stay around the S.co area (closer to downtown), so maybe that helps.

  • This is interesting to me.  We're moving to Austin this summer and I really didn't realize this was such an issue.  What are the times or areas that it seems most prevalent?

Off the top of my head, I'm not really thinking of things like this (racial incidences) that occur often.  Maybe I'm just clueless about it-that's probably the case.  It seems like most of the violence I hear about it either break-in related or specifically aimed at a person/group of people (maybe gangs?)

  • To me superficially Austin is a progressive town.  I think that has to mostly do with the transplants from various parts of the states/western europe.

But after living here for awhile and meeting alot of natives, seeing how the town is naturally segregated the people seem alot more maybe not racist but definately prejudiced if that makes any sense.

Several businesses and a mall shut down during Texas Relay - just bc it was Texas Relay and the "type of people it brought"

  • And I'm not saying this is a bad town or people run around using the N word, etc etc at all - its just something I've noticed.

In that that article it lists several cop shootings where race issues where in question - and the officer was fired.

  • I don't care to go to Austin at all.  The couple of times DH and I have been there together weren't pleasant.  For me, it's more of a liberal and entitled mentality.  I will say the times we've gone were for the Marine Corps Ball, DH used to be stationed at Camp Mabry there and they seem to have more liberal beliefs, and the people we came across happened to be less then appreciative of the military.  Once DH was in his dress blues and we were walking back to our car from going out with a bunch of other people in the 6th Street area and this one guy who was definitely not drunk saw DH and just felt the need to lay into him about how needless the war was and how stupid Bush is.  He then proceeded to say he felt he was over-educated and maybe we didn't understand where he was coming from.  Sure, the guy has a right to his opinion but he was an idiot.  Obviously DH didn't say a word to him dressed in uniform, but I was really wishing he hadn't been in uniform so he could have hit the guy.  We've had a couple other episodes along the same lines.  I'm just glad we don't have to go there anymore.
  • Well, in Dallas, we recently had the lovely officer who denied the Houston Texan football player entrance into the hospital as his mil was dying, despite hospital staff and even another police officer begging him to let the guy go. This made national news. I am sure there are many others.

  • I wouldnt call this a race issue... its an issue of someone has a gun... police officers put their life in danger every day and you should hear the real truth about what goes on. There are areas in Dallas where crime is running rampant and officers arent even allowed to go without 4 officers to answer a call... It gets classified as a race issue because those areas happen to be a certain race and then the officer is the one that looks bad for fearing for his life.?
  • I used to live in Austin and I really don't agree with you, but that was just my experience.  Try heading out to East Texas and see what you think about that.
