What are these black and red bugs???

And how do I get rid of them?

We have an infestation of black bug that have red markings on them.  It seems they are mating now too because I see a lot of them hooked together at the butt.  I was trying to sweep the front stoop and they were attacking me.  I hate bugs to begin with, so I want to get rid of these ASAP.

Any suggestions?

Re: What are these black and red bugs???

  • Japanese beetles?  Supposedly, soap and water spray will control them as long as there isn't a huge infestation.
  • I don't know if it's the case in this area, but where I'm from the Penn State Extension was always super-helpful in identifying the bug you're having problems with, and suggestions solutions!
  • Are they Box Elder Bugs? Here is a picture:

I'm not totally sure how to get rid of them. We call the "halloween bugs" and my MIL always says they are very hard to get rid of.

  • Yeah, sounds like Box Elder Bugs.  They would be coming from a Box Elder tree nearby probably.  Do you or any of your neighbors have those trees?  We used to get them all the time at my parents old house.  Not sure how to get rid of them either, but you could probably talk to an exterminator.
  • That is them!  I hate them!  I have no idea if anyone near us has a Box Elder tree.  I guess we'll just have to ride it out like we do every year.Sad
  • The picture didn't work, so I googled Box Elder bugs and found this website...

    http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/horticulture/DG0998.html

    which said this:

"During spring, you may see boxelder bugs on the outside of homes. These insects are emerging from their overwintering sites and are moving away from buildings. It is unnecessary to spray these insects as they are not entering homes. Treating them does not have any impact on the number of boxelder bugs found next fall."

  • They have been spotted in the house though.  Maybe they came in on one of the dogs or on one of us.
  • They kinda look like lightning bugs!

  • We have them too! We were told that when the weather gets hot they will leave. They were all over the side of our house.

  • They're at our house too. Super annoying but pretty harmless. I can always tell when one gets in the house because the cat is fascinated with it!

Thanks to whoever posted the link of what they actually are. Now I will stop calling them "damn black and red bugs".

  • They kinda crack me up though...there were about 5 of them all in a bunch on the window today.  I guess it was an orgy...lol.
