billing specialist or personal assistant?

Sometimes I get confused with what my job is at work. ...i think my ofc mgr thinks im her personal assistant... but my name tag says billing specialist.... "Jena, can you clock me out?"...as she walks by the time clock...   "Jena, can you find this thing on the internet for me, i want to use it for my kids 16th b-day party"..... "Jena, do you have any dresses that my kid can wear for her 16th bday party (in november)".......    "Jena, can you finish that letter for me?"......(i have no idea what she really wants the letter to say)......"Jena, can you get me some cigarettes when you go out to the bank?"...and what she just said  "Jena, do you have any batteries?"....

There is plenty more, but this is all I can think of right now.

SERIOUSLY? ......so can you see why i'm confused about my job/title?

OH she drives me crazy! I wish I could have my own office very far away from hers! But NO, my desk is RIGHT next to her office. Arent I lucky?!

Re: billing specialist or personal assistant?

  • I would have a really BIG problem with your boss, and probably would ask for a copy of my job description just to have on file...not to like wave it in front of her face, but if you aren't responsible for or being paid to do it...then don't :)

  • I wrote up my own job description. They didn't have one for my position.  I've been here since the company opened..  In OCT 07 I left (i had to move and it was to far to drive from my new house to this job).....so before I left the Dr. told/requested/asked/whatever me to write up my own job description...so I did.... and now i'm back i came back in Sept 08... ... and i took my old position back.  Some times I dont mind, but other times I feel like I can't get anything done bc i am constantly doing stuff for everyone else.  I get "walked" on...and I know that. ...

  •  i guess I would just make it a priority to do work related stuff first and then secondary your bosses non-work requests :)

  • Unfortunately if the job description states "and other duties as assigned" or something similar, there isn't much recourse.  This basically means your supervisor can ask you wipe her butt and you kind of have to do it.  If the description does not say that, then I would start to "forget" to do some of the things she askes of you.
  • it doesn't say anything about any other job duties. Like I said, I wrote my own job description, i just went through my day and wrote down what i did on a daily basis and a weekly basis that pertained to my "job".... some times I honestly dont mind helping her out, but some of the stuff..like clock me out..as she walks by the time clock...that kind of stuff is just like a kick in the face to me (like im not more important, and my time is not valuable)....
