  • Thanks! i'm writing everything suggested down and i'll look them up later this afternoon!!

Is anyone part of a book club where you can order books online or something like that? I am/was using "the literary guild" but I don't really like them. So i'm going to cancel my acct. But I want to join something bc they do have good deals sometimes.

  • Jena - I am still working my way through Anna Karenina by Tolstoy and really like it, but it IS a bit heavy reading for spring. I also want to read "The Sharper Your Knife, The Less you Cry." It's called something along those lines and is about a gal that quits her job to follow her dream of attending Le Cordon Bleu in Paris.

  • go to the library!!!

The Memory Keeper's Daughter-- very interesting, quick read, hard to put down.?

?the "His Dark Materials"trilogy by Philip Pullman is really good. Its meant to be young adult sci/fi fantasy stuff, but its really good. the 3 books are "the golden compass" (the movie was nowhere near as great as the book) "the subtle knife" and "the amber spyglass" (if you like them you'll want to read all 3)

"The curious incident of the dog in the nighttime" was really good

anything by Mitch Albom (tuesdays with morrie, five people you meet in heaven, for one more day) they all make me cry tho.

Michael J Fox's book "Always Looking Up" was really good.

Candy Girl by Diablo Cody (she wrote the movie Juno)

I also just finished a very easy read "Wife in the Fast Lane" it was pretty good. ?

  • i'm currently reading Twilight and I love it!!! I can't wait to get to the others to find out what happens once I"m finished with this one!! :)

Wicked is also a great read and I think that same author ( i cannot remmeber his name) has several other books that are good too.

  • I hate the library here. It's ridiculous. I actually went on Monday and i was there about 4 minutes before i was pissed and left. Nothing is in any sort of order...there are people everywhere, 1 person works there and its just so EW! I worked in a library for 3 years and it was nothing like that. UGH! i'm going to venture to the library here by my work, but the one inthe city wher ei live, Oh no no no, its horrible!

  • Meg, you're right about the Wicked author...he/she has another book that is a similar thing but I think it is about Cinderella...damn, can't remember the name!

Wicked is great, I would totally recommend it.  How is the Shopaholic series?  I hate to say I was disappointed with the movie, so I feel a bit more apathetic about reading the books.  I also love a nice mindless murder mystery/suspense novel, like the Jonathan Kellerman "Alex Delaware" or the James Patterson "Alex Cross" series.

  • Renea,?

I never saw the movie, but I also read the shopaholic books and I thought they were pretty good. It's British humour which I think is great.

In general tho, I always think books are better than the movies made about them.?

    ~Jenny~
  • Thanks for all the recommendations!

  • Jenny, you are so right about books in general being better than the movies that they were based on.  Case in point, Twilight (as it is sooo popular on this board).  The book was way better than the movie, even if Edward is dreamy Wink
  • everyone loves the Twilight series.... I guess i'm going to have to break down and try it... in general i do not like sci-fi kind of movies, or books..but everyone freakin' raves about how great the whole series is...so dang! I guess i'm going to break down and read it....i think a few of my sisters have the books so i'll be calling them tonight!

  • Thanks for posting! I just finished reading a book and will be heading to the library tonight, so I have a list to bring as well.   Smile
  • I'm convinced that the polk county library system just sucks all around. I took a list of books to the library when I got off work. They did not have one single book on the list! what the heck! The only thing they had was Baby Proof by Emily Giffin. So, I got that and one other book, The girl who quit swimming.

Kim...I liked this series except for the new one, Love the One You're With.  As a newlywed, I actually found it disturbing!  Just thought I'd give a head's up.

I also really liked the Twilight series.  Although book #2 is a whine-fest IMO, #'s 1, 3 and 4 were great.  I wouldn't call them science fiction, myself. I think they fall squarely in the romance category with some suspense thrown in for good measure.  They are very entertaining and super-fast reads.

  • Well, I'll be odd one out and say I hated Twilight. I got sucked in, read them all and when i was done I was like "You stupid idiot, I can't believe you just spent $50 on this crap"... some of the things that Edward did stood out to me as borderline controlling/abusive. Pouting when she was on the phone, disconnecting her car so she couldn't go places. Lame. It seems a little out of sorts that America is all?twitter-pated?about a relationship where the girl basically worships the guy, cant breathe without him, and he controls her. Having been in a controlling relationship where someone did these types of things to me, its not the type of thing I want my teenage daughter looking up to and trying to?emulate.?

?Also, I wasn't a huge fan of the Shopaholic books, but her others ?(Can You Keep a Secret, Undomestic Goddess, and Remember Me) were HYSTERICAL!

I'm also a big fan of Jennifer Weiner, she wrote "In Her Shoes" that was made into a movie, but also "Good in Bed", "Little Earthquakes" and "Goodnight Nobody"?

  • Meagan, that is a strong point about Twilight, and something that I hadn't thought about before.  I guess it is a good point, and I like the books more for the suspense in the story line as opposed to the relationship between Bella and Edward, which I find a bit tedious.  Still, if a guy did those things to me I would be gone...
