therapist

Can anyone recommend to me a good councelor or therapist or pshycologist?

?Can anyone tell me the difference between the 3?

Re: therapist

  • Counselors and Therapists are essentially the same- both have Master's Degrees -it depends on their licensing. Example: Licenced Practicing Counselor (LPC) has a masters degree in Counseling and usually practice a broader range of counseling. Licenced Marriage and Family Therapists also have a masters degree but specialize in Marriage/Family counseling. A lot of times you will see LPCs that are also LMFTs.

Psychologists have PhDs. In general, unless they have a PhD in counseling, they have more of a clinical/research background. They can not perscribe medication

Psychiatrists are M.D.s and do not focus on counseling- they focus on application of psychiatric drugs.

Hope that helps, if you have any other questions, let me know.

  • I guess I should add that this is all based on the field of psychology. Also, another way of thinking of therapists are that they are specialists in their field of counseling.
  • One thing I wanted to add was that some counselors/ therapist have PhDs as well. There are tons of LPC's that have a PhD's and that does not make them a psychologist.

  • True, many have multiple degrees

To clarify: to be a psychologist you have to have a Phd in a field of Psychology

  • I'm a counselor (LPC) and can make some recommendations...What area of town are you looking in?
  • While many LMFTs and LPCs have both licensures, there is often a theoretical difference between the two - which most clients wouldn't even realize... simply a difference in how the two trainings conceptualize people and change.

I would recommend Adam Coffey, Ph.D., Judy Cannon, Ph.D., Cyndi Peters, MS.... Adam and Judy are in Dallas and Cyndi is in Coppell.  If you google any of them you will get their websites.

TTC since August 2008 4 cycles Femara = BFN Dx PCOS February 2010, 1000 mg Metformin XR IUI #1: Dexamethasone + Femara + Ovidrel + Progesterone = BFN IUI #2: Dexamethasone + Femara + Ovidrel + Progesterone = BFP! Our son arrived January 17, 2011!

I second Judy. I used to go to the same church as her and she is a wonderful woman personally and professionally.

  • I am looking in the Ft. Worth area.

The reason I ask for information is because I had a panic attack on Easter. I had had a argument with DH and I got soooo upset that the room started spinning. I had to sit down and then my heart and breathing sped up and I was tensing up really bad and then I passed out/blacked out. When I came to I had no idea what DH and I were fighting about and I didn't know what had happened.

Well since then when my heart rate goes up I have to stop myself, so I can breath.

That being said I went to my gyno on Wednesday for a pap smear and breast exam and a follow-up on my BC I started 3 months back and I told her about all that. I have to see a cardiologist and then she want's me to see a counselor or pyshcologist about my issues? or maybe my anger? She didn't specify and she also didn't give me her recommendation she was going to give me.

Anyway, I hope that you can refer me to the right person.?

By the way Erica106, my name is Erika "]?

  • I'm another LPC here.... I think you should look into your Employee Assistance Program through work(or your husbands) . Often many EAP's will offer up to six sessions for free and then rest at a reduced rate. Maybe you shoudl start there and see someone for free and then begin to pay out of pocket.

Sounds like this must have been a really big fight between you two and maybe seeing a Marriage counselor together and you having your own independent therapist to help you individually is what I would reccomend.

  • I second looking into eap for free sessions--but I work full time for an eap company so I am bit biased Wink

it is a good way to get started in counseling if you have some goals in mind and want short term, solution focused, results oriented counseling.

I'd definitely recommend some counseling-either marriage or individual-or both.

  • Oh, and I am not familiar with the FW area so I am little help--sorry!
  • I just wanted to chime in that the anxiety you're having could be related to the BC you just started 3 months ago.  Hormones greatly affect mood!  I have been on a few that seriously made me want to hurt people.
  • About a year ago, I had MAJOR problems with panic attacks and anxiety. I went to Carol Henry www.carolahenry.com and she helped quite a bit. She's in Fort Worth off University. I hope you're able to figure it all out soon!

  • I was taken off of my BCP by my doctor and now everything that my husband does makes me want to kill him.

The slightest look is making me go crazy and because he can't deal with it he drinks. Which only makes me more crazy.?

I will take to my husband about what his work offers as I do not have a job right now.

Thanks for your help but more advice and comments are still welcome.?
