Do not want to call student's parents
Ugh. My Language Arts students turned in essays earlier this week and two girls turned in identical essays. The only change was they flipped the order of their 2nd and 3rd paragraphs. But the essays were word-for-word the same.
I have a very strict policy on copying. When I catch students doing this, I make them read their essays outloud to me so they can hear that each essay is identical, I give them a 0 for the assignment (which they can't make up) and they have to get their essays signed by their parents, so they are the ones to explain what they did wrong. This goes no matter if the student is the one who copied, or who allowed their work to be copied.
One girl told me her parents want to talk to me about this further. The dad left me a voicemail at work saying he wanted to talk about the "accussation of cheating and his daughter" and to please call him today after 4pm. I really don't want to call; I think he probably thinks his daughter doesn't deserve the punishment. Bleh.

I just got off the phone with the dad. Turns out the student lied to her dad about what happened, so he was unsure of why I said she cheated. I explained the whole situation, as well as my policy, and he completely understood.
yay! I am sending him copies of both girls' essays tomorrow, so he can see exactly what happened.
I think I am just stressed because I have another parent that is being a PITA right now. She thinks all the teachers are picking on her sons and that we don't understand their needs, so she has just decided to no longer communicate with the school. Meanwhile, her son is giving me attitude every day about every little thing and not getting his work done. Fun.

I made the students take turns reading their essays one paragraph at a time, so they could hear each other read the EXACT SAME WORDS. hahaha
The dad will get to read both when I send them home tomorrow. He was pretty mad at his daughter after we talked. I am glad I am not her. Don't lie to your parents and think we won't talk!
Seriously! This particular child is in my honors class, scores advanced on the CST and is labeled GATE, so she thinks that makes his snotty behavior ok. He also has low B's in both of my classes now (lang arts and social studies) because he turns most of his work in late or not at all, and is doing poorly on tests because he doesn't think he has to pay attention. I have called his mom 3 times since May 4, without a single response. My VP thinks I should wait around in the parking lot before school and catch her as she drops her kids off! lol
I talked to an education consultant at a training I went to yesterday and he told me I should tell the kid, that being "advanced" and in honors isn't enough. Basically, if the kid thinks he is so great, he should prove is by scoring a perfect CST score and earning straight A's. Kind of a backhanded motivation.
