POLL: What have you done with your dress?

Me; nothing.
Sadly it is hanging up on the guestroom closet door mocking me everytime I go in there. I haven't cleaned it or boxed it up yet b/c I think I wanna put it on again soon! Actually Im thinking of throwing an all girls party where everyone wears their wedding dresses! Of course, I'd have to lay tarps over the carpeting & everyone would have to drink out of sippy cups, & we couldn't eat...but it could be fun right??
Please tell me Im not the only one who hasn't done anything with their dress yet!!

Re: POLL: What have you done with your dress?

  • you are not alone my friend. i think im even worse, its laying on top of some boxes in the storage room.
i swear eventually i will get it cleaned and boxed, one of these days :-(
  • The only thing I've done is cleaned it.  It's not boxed because I want to sell it, but I haven't gotten around to posting anything.
  • I had mine altered to a cocktail dress. I'm looking into having it dyed next.
  • not sure if you know this...but it's best to get it cleaned asap. depending on the type of material the longer the stains sit in there (grease, white wine, etc) the harder it will be to get them out.  i had a $5K Reem Acra and it's at the dry cleaners.  i had no idea how imporant it was to have it cleaned asap but once i got to the dry cleaners turns out the longer it sits without being treated the more chance the stains will never come out.  white wine takes about 5 months to ferment and then you will see a bunch of black and purple stains anywhere the white wine set in on your dress. i'll let you know how satisfied i am with the cleaning. i live in dallas and took it to a very reputable place.
  • My dress is hanging in the closet also.  Obviously I'm not getting it cleaned or doing anything special to it.
  • Hey, you've got a GSP.  We have 4 of them.

Anyway, I have done nothing with my dress.  It's still hanging on my door.  I keep telling myself I MUST get it to the cleaner, but so far it hasn't happened.  See, it's not just you.

  • If you decide to get your dress dry cleaned, be sure to get references first, and read the tag on your dress! I took my dress to a dry cleaner that I thought was reputable, and they wet cleaned my almost $4k (including alterations and tax) lazaro gown, and now it's ruined, and I'm having a horrible time getting compensated. It makes me want to cry just thinking about it. So please, don't let this happen to you! Make sure you are specific with the cleaners about how this dress will be handled.
  • It's cleaned and boxed... but I'm not sure what to do with it now. I hadn't really planned on keeping it but it's a discontinued style so I doubt I can sell it. Maybe I'll donate it or something... not sure....
  • Mine is in it's bag, laying flat under our bed.  It hasn't been cleaned yet, I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with it.  Nothing was spilled on it (seriously, nothing) and there's no chocolate/food on it (we had a fountain that my niece LOVED - it looked like she had stuck her face in it at one point) so I think it's okay for now.  I don't want to sell it - I love my dress and it's discontinued!  :)
  • Mine went to the cleaners a few days after the wedding. It is in a bag in my moms guest room closet. I will probably keep it there for awhile

  • I'm still debating whether or not I want to spend the money to get mine cleaned. I'm not sure what I would do with it after I got it cleaned anyways.
  • Another great thing to do with a wedding dress is take it in and have a baptismal dress made or a little girls dress made out of it. Cuz really when (other than a girls party) will you ever where it again.  And really did you want to where your mothers?  I was married once before (Divorce 6yrs now) and am getting married again in October 2007.  I wouldn't even pic my first wedding dress again.  It's beautiful, but I'm at a different point in my life and have a completely different style.  Why do we hold on to these things?  Sell it so someone else can get a good deal or make something out of it.  Storing it?  Why?????

  • I had mine cleaned right after my wedding and sold it the first week of February on Craigslist. The money helped us make our move to DFW.
  • threw it away.  I seriously had NO attachment to the dress and it was only $250 in the first place.  It would have cost me more than to clean/preserve it - not worth it to me.  In fact, the dress in general was of very little importance through the whole wedding planning process.  Just not a priority to me.  It was also not sellable b/c it was beyond altering!  I did salvage the lace overlay on the dress and my DH's mom is using it for a baptismal gown.

  • Mine turned into ashes!!  Mine was up at our local dress/clothing dress getting cleaned and preserved and unfortunately there was a big fire in our town last month so my dress is gone!! Sadly the building my dress was in along with 3 others were completely burnt down.

  • I donated mine to Brides Against Breast Cancer about a month after the wedding.
  • I on the other hand got my dress preserved. Some think its worth it, but Im regreting it now because if I want to wear it violates the waranty on the preservation of the dress.. My recomendation if you dont want to look at it too much is to find a cedar chest and use that.
  • I had mine cleaned and preserved through an online company www.adweddings.com for $99. It came out great and is in a really nice box with a window you can see the dress through, but now I am not sure what to do with it!

I figure even if I sell it I'd still need to clean it and this was the best price I found after searching around for a while. Good luck!
  • I would really like to wear it again and do a Trash the Dress session.  However, my husband wont let me do it.  it will probably just continue to sit in the closet.
