Re: GL Diamond!

  • Thanks!!

My friend is manning the first air station, they went to get everything together, and the person in charge had bought donuts!  Doesn't sound like a good idea right before you run up the mountain.

  • LOL, no I'd suggest staying away from the donuts, at least till you're finished!  So so excited for you though!

  • Well I did it!

The weather was perfect for running.  Cloudy and high 50s when we started, a few sprinkles about 5 miles in, not enough to get wet though.  It was sunny on the way down the mountain then got cloudy again as I was finishing, I don't think it got over 65 (last Sat it was 80 and clear).  Looking at the weather though it is only 44 on top of one of the mountains.

I didn't partake in the donuts at the first aid station at mile 4, just water.  Then the climb up the mountain, I'm glad I had done this before so I knew what to expect.  Guaje Ridge, and the top of my climb (8800ft) was the second aid station, 6.5 miles in.  Just past here is the start of the long downhill, and I realized I wasn't in pain yet Smile.  I think it flattened out around 9.5 miles, and it felt nice to run through the canyon.  The last aid station was at 11.5 miles, here it was Christmas!  All the people working it were dressed up, and there were a lot of Christmas decorations on the trails nearby.  The last 0.2 miles of the race is evil, up a steep trail carved out of rock, but at least I knew I was close.  I finished strong, and I'm glad I did it.

My estimated finish time was 3:30 and I did 3:29, so pretty close!  I had orginally hoped for 3:00, but with some slacking and other stuff lately I decided not to push myself.... Next year  Wink

  • AHH!  I'm jealous!  It sounds like an awesome race!  Amazing time too!  Congrats...this is a huge, huge, HUGE accomplishment!  I sent the elevation map to Mike and he's in awe of you right now.  He send his congrats too.

I'm going to try and get Mike to push our vaca out next year so I can do this now...maybe not the 50k like I was planning, but I def. want to do the half if nothing!

Do you have any pics to share?

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

  • DH took some pictures when I was finishing, but I haven't looked at them yet...

It was a good race, but I'm not sure I would give up a Caribbean vacation for it!  You should look at Pajarito Trail Fest, it is this fall, either 10k or 15mile.  I did the 10k last year, and it was a really tough race too, but might be a good intro to running in Los Alamos for you.

Awesome job Claire. I second Mike, complete awe!!! All I had to hear was Guaje Ridge and my knees started aching.
  • Thanks  :)

I'm just glad we came down the back of the mountain, coming down Mitchell from Guaje has done a number on my knees more than once.
