Ok ladies not sure if you remember my question last week or not but basically I am having to decide between to crappy insurances. One that covers NO PRENATAL OR MATERNITY and one that does. While the one does here is how it is set up: I have to 100% out of pocket everything up to $5k (wether its going to the doc for the flu or prenatal) then I have to 50% out of pocket up till another 2.5K. So grand total this insurance is $7.5K YEARLY (from enrollment date). AND even with that there is no guarentee that everything else will be "covered".
The other plan only has a $40.00 copay and most things are covered (dr. visits for illnesses but no maternity) .......
Soo finally here is my question: If you could ballpark the figure how much would you say your pregnancy cost or would have cost if you had not had insurance from your first pre-natal visit to the delivery???
Re: Maternity Ins ? again
I do not have maternity insurance. My total bill for the baby and I after my last one was roughly?
General Breakdown: (Keep in mind I had a scheduled c-section)
OB for entire maternity needs = 3500
Sonograms (1 regular at OB office and 2 with a perinatal specialist) - 2100
Misc Labs/Bloodwork - 2000 (This is after we rejected any specialized genetic testing for cystic fibrosis and such)
My hospital bill was 11,000 - we are in the process of resolving that with the hospital - I imagine we will end up paying around 7-8
Ella's hospital bill was 6,000 - we paid 3,500.
Epidural - 900?
I also was on zofran and prenatal vitamins my entire pregnancy - monthly that was 120.
?I hope this helps.??
I had great maternity coverage once I got pregnant but when I was going through infertility, not so much. Every ultrasound (2 a month) was $200.
It's a tough situation to be in. Personally, I would probably opt for the maternity coverage. You can't predict what will happen with your pregnancy. Even if you don't have any risk factors, you may have issues. One girl in my moms group spontaneous got pregnant with triplets and was on bedrest in the hospital for 8 weeks. I realize that's not common, but pregnancy is so delicate and you just can't know what you'll need and I would hate to make a health related decision while pregnant based on having no insurance. Of course, I always opt for the most coverage so I feel "safe" so I'm probably very conservative in this area.
we're in the same situation since we're self employed and apparently this country doesnt want or care if self employed people have babies!
?
breakdown: (for vaginal delivery)?
Hospital care/delivery $3085.00
OB care/delivery $2500
epidural $1500
my dr was awesome and basically whenever i needed a sonogram she worked out a deal with the sono tech that I wouldn't be out of pocket any money. she rocks! i think i might have spent another $200 to 300 on various lab work, etc. ?
basically you can call the hospital where your OB delivers and ask what deals they have for CASH/self paying patients. you can pay it all at once or in payments.?
I've been blessed that i had fairly easy pregnancies with both boys, no complications and no worries with 2 healthy babies. All i can say is talk to your doctor and maybe they can have some good insight for you. we didn't have any other options and thankfully my dr and hospital like self paying patients who pay in cash! (guess they dont always get paid by insurance until months later!)?
good luck- if you have any question you can email me
