Mom and Dad have agreed to pay for the crib ( budget no more than $500) while DH and I will pay for the dresser/changing table. We have a good size closet with shelving so we should have enough storage. Anyway, where did you go beside Babies R' Us, Bellini and Buy Buy Baby to look for furniture? Have any of you thought of purchasing the crib that becomes a full bed? I know I want coffee colored furtniture and I am on Long Island.
Re: Baby Furniture
We're probably going to do the convertible crib. I have to say I don't really care much one way or the other since I think all cribs just look like boxes. (I'm more into strollers than cribs).
I would do a google search for baby furniture and your zip. There are a lot of smaller stores (not chains) that will pop up. Also Pottery Barn, Ikea and Room and Board have childrens stuff as well.
We looked at BrU and Buy Buy Baby and we ended up going to a crib outlet center in Staten Island that is near my MIL. They delivered to us in queens with no extra charge. Their delivery and set-up was $50. They have really good deals.
We got a Bonavita/BabyItalia 3 piece set (convertible crib, 5 drawer dresser and 3 drawer dresser/changing table) for $1,200. The same set was nearly $2,000 at BrU.
We liked the idea of having a crib that could become a toddler bed and then a full size bed.

JCP has beautiful and affordable nursery furniture. The only thing is that it is only offered on-line (jcp.com) or catalog. So you can't touch and feel. But I promise you, you will not be disappointed.
I am work for a home manufacturing company and one of our clients is JCP, they have a very HIGH quality standard.
We got our crib from JC Penney and are really happy with it.
We got the Emily Crib, in black: Here's a pic:
We did have to order it off the JC Penney website. But, you can have it shipped to store and save significantly on the shipping costs!
You may want to get a copy of the "Baby Bargains" book, it's great for reviewing everything baby related, including furniture manufacturers.
Thoughts on a convertible crib, ours is, but I will likely convert only to a toddler bed and not bother to fully convert to a full sized regular bed, as we'll likely use a twin for DD when she's ready, rather than a Full (too big)
I've also seen good reviews for IKEA baby furniture as well, FWIW!
Differences between JC Penney baby furniture and other more expensive brands--Pine vs. harder woods.--may be more likely to ding, it hasn't been an issue for us.
We ended up with the davinci kalani set. The crib was bought at bru & the rest was bought at csn.com. The crib was $269 plus tax. The dressers were each $260 +tax & shipping.?
Ours converts to a toddler bed & then full size bed. Whether it gets used as a full size bed remains to be seen, but dd will use it as a toddler bed.
The reason I got it was because the top of the furniture was rounded & it had nice feet. It was the only set that had both that I saw.
The only other one that did was a $900 crib and we couldn't justify that. ?
We looked at boutiques for furniture. The people working there had way more experience and knowledge about the furniture. They also take the time to help you "play" with the furniture.?
