My thing with wine is I don't know much about it and I really don't know what she drinks.

And I do worry about whatever I would get lasting for many years until whatever special event it is actually happens...
Another thing I thought of was a gift I loved for my 25th from a friend - she got the local monthly magazine's 'best of' issue and bought me nominal gift certificates for 5 different places that were winners (dessert, nail place, happy hour, etc.) - places I hadn't been, but obviously were good enough to be voted 'best of' that I should check out.

This isn't a big gift, but another thing that I found that I think is so cute is this co. that makes 'old school' countdown chains. I've given a few wedding ones and people seem to love them. If you're friend is having a big 30th party you could give her this 30 days before (if that hasn't already passed) so she can count down till her big party.
