Doctor for migraines?

I was wondering if any of y'all could recommend a doctor for me to go to for my migraines? I live in Fort Worth, so someone there would be ideal, but I will take recommendations for anywhere in the DFW area.

Since I started getting them, I have always just taken Excedrin Migraine, but they are starting to get worse and more frequent and the Excedrin isn't really doing the trick anymore.

  • I just went to my general doctor and he was able to give me an Rx for it.
  • It wouldn't hurt to start with your GP. They can help rule out some things and will most likely send you in for an CT scan, just to be safe.

    Mine has me on a blood pressure medicine that is really helping. Plus, he gives me the good stuff, Zomig, for when I do get bad ones.

  • I've had migraines since I was 8 years old. I am at the point now where I only see a neurologist. I have been on every medication out there and every alternative medicine course. But he has been the only one to be able to keep them somewhat under control.
  • I would start with your GP if you have not yet been diagnosed with migraines. Unless they are unbearably severe, your GP should be able to start trying you on meds for when you get them and, if needed, preventative meds.

    I've run the gammit on meds to take when I get them, so I've been on a preventative for 4 years now. I still get them, but not nearly as often (fewer than one a month). I just have to suffer through the pain. Sleeping helps.

  • If you have a PPO I'd just go straight to a neurologist. ?I see Dr. Simon Tan in Grapevine and I live in N. FW. ?He's really sweet and very thorough. ?

  • Thanks, y'all. I do have a PPO. I guess I haven't been officially diagnosed but I've told my doctor what happens and she said that's what they are. I have aura with them and a family history of them as well. I appreciate your recommendations.
  • If you need a neurologist I would highly recommend Dr. Augusto Lastimosa at Harris downtown...I work with him and he is honestly one of the nicest doctors ever....

     Dr. Lincoln Chin is also very good...

  • I had a headache that literally put me off work, and in bed in the dark for almost 3 months-it was constant but the intesity just varied-when the intensity was low it was still bad, but I could at least function better. My regular doctor diagnosed me with migranes, but when nothing got better, I saw a neurologist and and ENT (ear nose and throat) doc.  After all that a CT scan from the ENT showed I had large polyps (sp?) in my sinus cavitites (I had even been treated for sinus infections before this point to try and get some relief).  I had surgery to correct the polyp issue, and I got immediate relief.  However, I do still have migranes, but they aren't near as bad, and dont come as often. Now I take a daily prevention medication, and I have a couple of RXs that I can take at the onset if I get one.  (one RX is for what I would take at the onset of what I call just a migrane, and the other RX is what I take if the first RX doesnt help and I get one that's out of control). 

    Also, be careful with the over the counter drugs and headaches.  If you are getting them that often now and constantly taking over the counter meds, you can get what they call "rebound headaches"...so the cycle of a headache and the OTC drugs just causes more headaches.  I went through that as well.  I'm now told not to take OTC drugs for migranes, just my RXs.

  • Mine sound like yours - they seem to be getting worse, but not bad enough yet for preventative meds.

    My doctor recommended I take daily supplements of riboflavin and magnesium. They've seemed to help. You may want to ask about this when you go in.

    Finally, if you haven't started already, keep a migraine diary. Google for examples of these. Track when you get them along with possible triggers: what you ate, time of month, weather, sleep, etc. You may see a pattern. I've learned mine are worse with cheese, dehydration, and Chinese food (MSG).
