traveling while pregnant?

is there a certain time where the drs advise you to stop traveling? obviously i traveled here to japan at about 18 wks and was fine, so it isn't the flight part i'm worried about. just being somewhere else and having something happen. i'll be 28 wks on saturday. my DH left for singapore this morning, and i have a chance to join him next monday for a week. i think it would be a cool opportunity (free flight, free hotel to stay with him). He'll work some during the days, but i can hang out in the hotel, by the pool, walk around some by myself and then at night we can hang out. My pg has been fine and problem-less so far. I'm not too far along to worry about going, am I??

Re: traveling while pregnant?

  • you should be fine at this point. I think it is something like 32 weeks for flying...

  • I just asked my doctor this same question - her advice was 32 weeks for international trips and 34 for domestic. I think you should go and enjoy your trip!
  • You should be fine.  My doctor actually said the only concern with flying at any time is going into labor away from your OB/hospital and if you were fine with that, you could fly up until your due date.  The airlines aren't allowed to ask you how far along you are, but they are allowed to deny you the right to fly.  He also said to stay heavily hydrated during the flight!
  • I don't have anything to add to the convo about traveling while pregnant, but what a cool opportunity!  I'd definitely take advantage of that if I were you!  Sounds like you'll be okay as far as the pregnancy goes, from what PPs are saying.  How very cool - first Japan, now Singapore!  Such a neat adventure. :)

  • the airlines will let you fly up until 10 days before and after you give birth.  My doctor said no air travel at 34 weeks.  My swollen ankles said no air travel at 32 weeks.
  • I just wanted to add that you should make sure of the entry requirements for that country online before you buy the ticket.  Singapore is right next to Malaysia and I know that to go to Malaysia, you can't be more than 4 months pregnant or they won't let you in the plane or in the country.
  • Sounds like you're good! :)  My docs said 35 weeks so I bet you'll be fine! :)
  • I'm totally planning on going. I don't have to buy a ticket-I can fly Space A. It's free on a military plane, and I"m sponsored by the military since my DH is in the Air Force. So entry into the country and all that isn't a problem. I had an obgyn apt last Thurs and the dr said I was totally fine, and actually encouraged me to go, saying Singapore was a neat place. They gave me a letter stating I was ok to fly, and copies of my records from my last apt, just in case something were to happen, so I'm sure I will be fine. The only problem now- the trip got delayed for my DH- so I'll go but not this week. Maybe next week. I'll go at some point though- and I'm excited about it!
  • If your doctor said it was okay & gave you clearance & paper work, why ask about it on here?  None of us are doctors.
  • ?I asked before I went to the dr. Notice the time and date stamps. I'm aware you aren't drs but thanks for your rude comment. That was appreciated and oh so helpful ;)
  • On 5-22 you said "last Thursday" which would be 5-14.  Maybe instead of last Thursday you meant yesterday, I don't know.
  • I am actually a day ahead of you- like it is 9:30sun am here- and 7:30sat pm there. So when I said "last Thurs" I did mean 5/21 but it was already past that here. I think the date/time stamp on here is still in central TX time, but for me physically I'm ahead. Yes, it is a bit confusing. Sorry for any complications. I am aware that no one on here is a dr, and of course for any issues the DR is who I will listen to, not nesties. However, there are several prego/past prego moms on here that have gone thru things- I thought I would ask them and see if they had flown and what they experienced. Would I ever take their advice over my own instincts or legit medical advice- of course not. But it doesn't hurt to ask and see what other had already gone thru. There are people on here all the time that ask questions on here that they could ask elsewhere. I guess that is the whole point of an online chat board. Eh, if the question bugs you, or you don't know the answer, ignore it. I appreciate what advice people did have. Turns out, the trip was cancelled for now anyway, due to some paperwork issues (not my DH's fault). I am sure he will get to go at some point, and I'll join him then, but it won't be this week I guess.?
  • Sorry - wasn't trying to be mean or rude - it just didn't make sense after you said 'last week' - I did offer up what my doctor had told me.

I forget about the time change.  Sorry your trip was canceled.
