Digital Camera Rec's needed

Please recommend your digital camera. I need something that will let me take a picture without having to wait forever after taking the first one. I also want something fairly simple, not too expensive, but high quality images. I know nothing about the D-SLRs, or ones that are almost at that level, but I think that's what I want/need.

Re: Digital Camera Rec's needed

  • I researched digital cameras like crazy last month and the one that kept getting the highest reviews was the Cannon Power shot and that's the one I ended up with.  So far I love it and it take amazing shots.....they have differenet styles, I ended up with the smallest style and it cost $199 at target

     Good Luck

  • I just have a point and shoot, not a snazzy DSLR, but I love mine.  It's the Nikon Coolpix S550.  For a little p&s, I think it takes great pics.

  • I have an ultra-zoom point and shoot. It's pretty much as close as you can get to an SLR, without the price.

I have the Canon Power Shot S5 IS. I'm really happy with it - it takes great photos and has some great features. It's definitely bulkier than most point and shoots, though. But not as big as an SLR.

  • I wanted a DSLR for my trip to Europe, but "settled" for a really good point and shoot.  I just got the Canon PowerShot SX200 IS.  It is the newest powershot and I have to say, I was impressed with the quality of the pictures it takes.  I have been reading the manual and doing online tutorials to try and become more knowledgeable about it.  You can switch over to manual settings to change the aperture and shutter speed, which is nice.

I also love that it takes HD movies and we can connect the camera to our TV and show pictures to people.

  • I bought a canon sd1100 a couple of months ago.  Canon should have come out with the new powershot series already ( I think in April).  You should be able to find the sd1100 discounted or take a look at the new line.  Canon gets rave reviews for point and shoot although it is not a snazzy dslr.  For a dslr I would take a look at both the canon and nikon series.

SLR camera's take a decent amount of "work" before they start taking really good pictures.  You need to understand shutter speed with different light settings and a whole bunch of stuff, otherwise the focusing with never be quite right.

Most DSLR's do have an automatice setting for focusing.  With DSLR's you have to buy the body seperate from the lens.  The bodies will run you about $400+ and lenses can be even more pricey.

For SLR's I like the Nikon series.  I have a film Nikon D-80 SLR and I'm comfortable with how it feels in my hand.  Make sure you hold the camera before you buy it.  If it doesn't feel comfortable you probably won't use it that often.  Also finding that one piece of dust that made it's way into the lense and now is showing up on every picture you take is a PIA.  Also cleaning it without scratching anything important is a PIA.

Olympus and Canon make the best point and shoot cameras.  Most of them have similar options to a DSLR camera.  I've had the olympus 800 for a couple years now.  You should be able to get a 10mp P&S for a very good price that will take high resolution pictures.

  • We bought the Sony Cybershot and we LOVE it. ?I highly reccommend it!
  • I love my Canon G9. It's somewhere between a DSLR and P&S. The auto setting for me is great, but the manual settings and lens availibility works fantastic for my (much better at photography) husband.

I think Krista's camera would be one I'd consider if I was getting something smaller and sleeker.

  • I don't know what brand your old camera is, but I know Canon has a trade in program. You can send them your old canon camera and they'll give you a good discount on a new Canon of your choice. Check to see if any of the cameras your interested in have that option.

  • Sounds like I should check out the Canon's. I've got an Olympus, so I wouldn't be able to trade in. Bummer.
