moving to DFW - where to look?

This may not be for a LONG time from now but the move is inevitable. DFW is huge, so we're trying to make a list of areas we would want to look and areas we wouldn't.  Any suggestions, neighborhoods MUCH appreciated :)

We'd prefer to be in a "small town" feel community and something near a lake - my DH and dog have to be able to run or we all go nuts.

  • Do one of you have a job in a certain area?  That will probably be a major factor in where you decide to look?

I agree. You probably don't want to move too far away from work or you'll be stuck in traffic all morning.

  • avoid The Colony. LOL. That's all I have to say about that.
  • I agree with the other two, look around your job area. I live in arlington but work in dallas ( I-30E) that takes 15-20 minutes. I must say anything Tarrant county is good to me.
  • Areas with Lakes that aren't too far out

White Rock Lake (Lake Highlands Neighborhood in Dallas)

    Rockwall

    Lake Worth

  • In addition to Rockwall, there is Rowlett which is not as far east. The neighborhood I grew up in backs up to Lake Ray Hubbard.
  • Grapevine is also an option.

I agree with the PP - you'll probably want to find out where work will be and then search from there. IMO - it's not worth working in West Fort Worth and living in Rockwall. You'll spend too much time on the road. There are some great communities all over this area.

  • The DFW area is huge.  As PPs have mentioned, a general location would go a long way in making recommendations.
  • hello,

If your looking for an apartment....I am moving to Keller this August from Boston. I found an agent to be my eyes down in and around the area. Her name is Kim with Apartment Agents. She has been working with me for some time now based on the criteria I select, the feel we wanted, and she researches and emails us a list of properties to choose from based on our budget. If I find a property on my own, I can call and ask her about it or she will find out. They offer incentives like a free move if its in a certain mile range or $100 gift card and I never had to deal with the property until I was ready to apply.  She told me where to look and where to avoid. She has children so it was helpful and she understood where we came from. The property we chose owns land next to it and is building a pet park that will be fenced in so the pets can go unleashed and play. We have a dog so this was a must! I have never lived in the city so she really worked in our favor.

    Just my two cents! =)

  • If you're looking on the Ft Worth side, Saginaw (north) and Benbrook (south) are great. They both definitely have the small town feel, with lakes closeby, but are close to the bigger city areas. We've been in Saginaw for 3 years and just love the area!
  • Also by White Rock Lake is Lakewood. More $$ than Lake Highlands (which is also good), but very close to downtown Dallas.

I love Rockwall. If we stayed here, we would totally buy there.

Be sure to check out the City of Dallas crime map. Surprise

  • The best city with the small town feel is Coppell.  It is close to everything, low crime rate, high test scores, great high school sports and bands, and beautiful homes.  They are a little pricey though.  But you get what you pay for.

  • Avoid The Colony. I would look North East where homes are moderately prices on large lots and highly scored school districts. We live in Richardson right now, but if you consider it stay on the west side of 75. Try looking into Wylie, Sasche, Lucas, and more north Melissa, and Anna small towns, great people.
