Does your MIL buy you clothes?

We visited the ILs this weekend, and my MIL sent me back with 2 pair of jeans and several tops.  I tried on the jeans, but never really looked at the tops.

Apprently my MIL shops for me in the junior section.  I was OK with the jeans, because hey - after having a baby I'm amazed I fit into anything junior sized, but the shirts are just too loud.  The way they were folded, I thought they were just plain T-shirts, but they all have prints or patterns on them.  Oh, and lets not talk about the sizes!

Feel free to share your clothing horror here.

Re: Does your MIL buy you clothes?

  • My current MIL does not but my ex-MIL did.  The first outfit she bought me was an expensive outfit from Jones of NY.  It consisted of purple velour leggings and a purple fuzzy sweater.  Ugh.  And because I couldn't allow a JOnes of NY outfit to go to waste and because she swore she wouldn't mind if I exchanged it, I did for something more my style.  After that she stuck to buying me sweatshirts and nightgowns which was fine by me.
  • Oh goodness! My MIL doesn't buy me clothes too often, but when she does it is always something SHE wears or something that has penguins on so she thought I would like it. I like penguins but not enough to wear them on my clothes. I wish I had a picture, but I refuse to wear it!

  • MIL has gotten me 2 shirts in the 9 years that I've been with my DH.  She realized when I tried them on that she has no idea what size I am and stopped buying me clothes.  Yay!

I couldn't imagine her trying to buy me pants, since I have enough trouble finding pants myself!

She did buy me a really nice bath robe 2 Christmas's ago, so as long as she sticks with stuff like that, she should be ok.

  • Ha ha!  This is a great post!  My MIL hasn't bought clothes for me in the past several years.  However, she has in the past and let's just say I'm glad she hasn't bought me any more clothing!

One year (I think the Christmas before we got married) she bought me this long sleeve black shirt with a reindeer appliqued on it.  It had sequins on it, too, if I remember correctly!  It was HORRIBLE!  I remember my BIL teasing me about getting that shirt.  Not sure why she thought I'd like it.  She didn't give one to my SIL.   I wanted to impress MIL and didn't want to be rude (she was actually MIL-to-be at that time) so I wore it on Christmas day!  Lol.  There's a picture of me in it somewhere.  After almost 5 years of marriage I no longer do things to impress MIL or much less care what she thinks!

She also bought me a teal-blue T shirt with Tigger on it.  I do love Tigger from Winnie the Pooh but not enough to wear that shirt!

  • Bless her heart, she's tried! DH & I met almost 7 years ago and since then I have been showered with iridescent butterfly flip flops, spongebob tshirts, grandma nightgowns, and giant sleep shirts with kittens and american flags. Horrible. She used to try buying me tiny slutty tops and other ridiculousness, but has since calmed it down to just cotton pjs because I'm no longer afraid to tell her nicely that it's not my style. I feel bad telling her, but the way I see it, if I don't, she'll continue to waste her money and I'll continue to accumulate crap! My favorite was the giant pink, fuzzy robe that had "love you a-latte" embroidered on the back with a coffee cup. *shudder*
  • No, but she gives me all of her shoes that she bought and never wore. They are always really cute.  My grandmother in law has bought a few winners though.

This makes me LOL because my MIL does the same thing. I like penguins so she buys me anything and everything she sees with penguins on them. It makes me laugh, but really, what does she think I'm going to do with children's books and a stuffed penguin dressed like a cheerleader that sings. I hope when I have kids they like penguins :)  Fortunately, I think the only penguin clothing she has gotten me has been pajamas and maybe a bathrobe.  She buys me at least one article of clothing every Christmas and it's rarely my style.  She usually included the gift receipts though, so I'm able to exchange them without hurting her feelings.

The one really standout gem she gave me one year was a sweatshirt. There was a huge picture of a golden retriever over what looks like a hunting scene. Then she told me that it was FIL's shirt but he never wore it so she was giving it to me. It's about three times my size and most definitely not my style.  Essentially she was cleaning out her closets one day and found it and decided to get rid of it. Instead of just asking if I wanted it, she wrapped it up with the Christmas gifts so I pretty much had to take it!  That's not how she meant for it to be at all, but that's kind of how it came off.  It still makes me laugh :)

  • my MIL and her Sister offered me their clothes many times.

This past year MIL's sister gave me a bag full of her clothes....she even said
"Some of them may be big, after 3 children....you know"

I right then thought to myself how considerate and sweet to offer, but umm i'm in my 20's so our styles are completely different (she's 63) and note what you said after three children ....

needless to say I didn't try any of the clothes on, just looking at it the sizes were much bigger than me, though she's barely 4'11" she did have 3 children and so the hips were definitely not going to match up. and the sweaters and shirts were definitely not colors i am fond of.

    lastly

MIL, I love her to death (as i do her sister) but MIL has had R.A since she was 12 years old, that's about 46 years of living with it...so she has to get petite sizes hemmed up a bit more since her knees hardly bend. Well she got tired of a pair that were too stretched for her *all her clothing has to have an elastic and to hold up again due to the R.A *
I was flattered she was sweet to offer it all to me, but the pants she handed me were definitely worn, very loud colors and waaaaay too short, i could tell by looking at them. While she and I are about the same height *well before her R.A got so bad that she couldn't stand straight*
She also did have 2 kids.

DH got mad when I said I wasn't putting it on and fine I took that because he's a man, he didn't get the whole size and style and children thing.

The one thing MIL bought me was a sweater for Christmas, she got me an extra large...........i'm a medium. lol. I still do wear it, it's brown....and warm.....does the trick and beats the heck out of wearing a bulky jacket.

  • No, thank god.  I'm super picky, so buying clothes for me that I would like would be difficult.  She and I don't have the same taste in clothes either.

  • Good Lord.. the thought of my MIL buying me clothes makes me cringe! She has never bought me any thank goodness, plus she would have a clue to size or style. And considering she doesn't even buy her oldest daughter.. who is 18 and has quite the boobs and gut on her the right size why would anyone think she'd be able to do that for me?SHE doesn't even wear appropriate stuff most of the time. She tends to try to dress like her teenage daughters. UGH!

  • Pookielove - MIL does that gift thing to me too! I think she buys junk on sale and has a feeling I may not like it, so she'll throw it in with my birthday/christmas/easter/whatever holiday gifts lol! Sometimes she'll even show me some item she bought and ask if I want it and if I tell her no, she'll try to sneak it in with gifts a year or 2 later! I don't know who she thinks she's fooling Stick out tongue

OMG, MIL did the same thing to me once!  A few years ago we had just moved into our house. She was buying us stuff like crazy which was super sweet of her, but she has a thing for dishtowels.  She must have already given us a dozen dish towels (as if we didn't already have any) and then in the middle of November, she comes over with more of them.  I told her I was out of space for dish towels and thanks anyway and yep, I got them wrapped up for Christmas that year.  I don't know if she forgot she already tried to give them to us or if she was just deadset on us taking those towels :)  Either way, I shouldn't complain. They have their quirks like anyone, but my in-laws are awesome. I like to say I hit the in-law jackpot :)

  • Um. No. Thank. God.

I would be horrified...although the color thing might be okay...she as a rule wears jeans or khakis with a neatral top.  I tease her all the time about how boring her wardrobe is and that I am going to call "what not to wear" on her.

  • When my husband and i dated, she at first got me cute stuff but only for holidays. ?Then she took a turn for the worse and started givign me some ugly stuff. ?Once we were married, she always gets me stuff for Christmas, but its usually always the wrong size. Its funny, her daughter in laws and I are the same size, but she must be delirious and think I can't wear what they do. ?They always get really cute clothes, but for me, not so much. ?Its annoying. ?She did get me a really cute coat though, even though I didn't need it, haha. ?If only she bought me the same stuff she bought her girls, then i'd have it made, haha.
  • I'm having a huge issue with this right now. Overall, no, my MIL doesn't buy me clothing except for maybe Christmas. Over the past 10 years, it has gotten better, but she really doesn't have the same taste as I do and I'm super picky as it is. Thankfully in the past year or two she has asked DH what specific stores I shop at and goes there or gets me a GC.

But, ever since we told them that we're pregnant she has been asking what type of maternity clothes she can be on the lookout for at yard sales. I'm not flaming yard sales. However, I personally want no one else picking out my maternity clothes-yard sale or not-given the small, fashionable section anyway. Secondly, her tasted to begin with are bad, and I can only imagine what she'd come back with. Third, I do look forward to looking cute with my bump and look forward to the shopping myself. And lastly? I'm not in maternity clothing really yet. She asks EVERY single time we see her and I always politely respond "No thanks, I'm ok right now and will just pick up things as I need them..."

This Sunday she asked again and I about lost it. She also wants to know what else she can be on the lookout for at yard sales for the baby. Personally, the stuff that I see that she brings back from these yard sales are like 20-30 years old half the time. She did however hand me books from the 70', which I figured, fine I'll take them to school..and she informed me that they were for my little one. Ok, upper elementary level, but whatever. Then she hands me educational CD-Roms that are upper elementary and I again explain that thank you, but I'm unable to download or install anything on school computers for the kids. She again explains that they're for the baby. Ready for long division, huh?!

Sorry for the HUGE vent and I doubt anyone read this far. I really hope that I'm not coming off as being ungrateful, this has just been a tiring few weeks with this topic!?
