Health Insurance/Work UGH!

I just called my PCP to make an appointment to get some travel vaccinations I need for our Nicaragua trip and I find out not only do they not do them but my insurance wont cover any of it. I have to go to a travel clinic to get the shots I need and insurance wont even cover the visit fee so I ended up having to pay $250 out of pocket to make sure I DONT GET SICK/DIE from typhoid or malaria! I called our company's HR and the lady was like yeah no its not part of our plan.

So let me get this straight....my employer AND my health insurance doesnt give a crap about my health or the health of those that I might infect when I return. Fabulous! Super Angry

Re: Health Insurance/Work UGH!

  • Will they cover the drugs?  I mean, if you got a prescription from your doctor for what they need and took it to your local drugstore to get them filled...will they be covered under your prescription coverage?  That might help defray the costs a little bit.  Do they give a malaria vaccine?  There's a pill you can take called Lariam...from what I remember you take it once a week for a few weeks before you go then continue once a week for 6 weeks (it's been a long time...but it's something like that).

  • Typhoid is a shot but malaria is a pill when I called my insurance Lariam and the other malaria pill werent covered.

    :(

  • That's lame. I don't understand that at all.
  • I don't get it either.?
  • I don't understand half the things insurance companies do.
  • They're just jealous because they're stuck in cali.
  • The part I didnt get is the health insurance guy said the reason they werent covered was because they were for "recreational purposes" (as if I'm asking for heroin or something) and they aren't required and since I am choosing to go to a place that requires it, the cost is on me. So I asked if my recreational activity was bike riding and I fall and break my arm, would they not cover my expenses then because I chose to go bike riding? He didnt really answer the question and still annoys me how the whole thing makes no sense.
