Where should we live?

FI has a Civil Service test ASAP in the Dallas area for a police dept. We're from Nashville.

We would ideally like to rent a house, but aren't quite sure which areas to start looking in.

Any ideas? TIA

(Like, if he was working in Mesquite, where should we look into living?)

Re: Where should we live?

  • If I were you I'd want to live in East Dallas. ?There's some really sweet little neighborhoods with older homes that are charming and it'll be between Mesquite and downtown Dallas. ?It'd also be close to White Rock Lake and pretty good access to lots of stuff. ?However, you do have to be careful because there's some rundown neighborhoods, too. ?Plus, he'd be driving against the traffic to get to work. ?

?If you want a more family oriented area I'd live in Rowlett.??It's also close to a lake--Ray Hubbard, if you're into that. ?Suburban school districts are better than Dallas ISD overall, but Dallas ISD does have some good schools, particularly at the elementary level.

I guess part of it depends on the kind of lifestyle you live as far as where you should live in relation to Mesquite. ?There's a couple of cops' wives on here--I think one has a husband working in Mesquite. ?Hopefully they'll see this and respond. ?:-)

?I hate to say that Dallas won't be near as pretty as Nashville. ?Good luck to your DH!?

  • We don't have a family yet, but we do want a family feel.  We are homebodies, and don't really need to be near nightlife.  We like staying in, watching movies, etc.  Very low key :)

FI is actually testing with Rowlett later this month, too, so we'll see which works out :)

I hope the cop wives do answer!  I am at a loss.

Thank you so much for your help.

  • Welcome to Texas! My dad has been a police officer in Rockwall for almost 20 years now. Rockwall is right across lake ray hubbard from Rowlett. I love the area. If I were you I would look into Rockwall. It is a great town and it has really grown alot in the last 10 years. There is always a community event going on and lots of shopping. Schools are great and the crime rate is very low. There are a couple of nesties that live in the are so I'm sure they will jump in soon to offer their opinion.

  • I was going to suggest Rockwall too, but my concern was the traffic getting across the lake.

  • Im one of the cops wife... hehe

We live in Mesquite, but are NOT happy here and will be moving soon hopefully!!! That being said... we would both consider Forney or Rockwall on the East side of Dallas. It really does depend on what station your dh gets stationed at though. Dallas is a BIG city and Northwest station could be an hour drive in traffic or more from Rockwall.... so it is really hard to give great advice on where, especially if your dh hates driving in traffic!

I'm the girl that emailed you a week or two ago,  if you remember!  :)  FI is testing with Mesquite this month, as well as Rowlett and Dallas.
  • I didn't realize he was testing for Dallas, too. ?My parents both worked for Dallas PD. ?So, I'm not a cops' wife, but a cops' kid (x2!). Their retirement system is awesome. ?They're making more now than when they were active and still doing well even with the economy in a downturn. ?I grew up in Garland, but they did consider moving us to East Dallas close to White Rock Lake at one point, but we stayed. ?

  • I work for the community section of the paper here and have a lot of information and am very familiar with many areas around here. My definite favorite would be East Dallas... specifically Casa Linda, M Streets, and Lakewood. They are all communities within Dallas, but like others said, there are some sketchy parts, as in any major city, but some great areas as well. As for other communities, Rockwall is great, but a drive from Dallas in traffic, also, if you go North of Dallas, the Preston Hollow community is beautiful and still fairly affordable.
