J&K Labor Law Investigation...

http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20281956,00.html

I'm honestly surprised it took this long for there to be some kind of investigation since I was hearing reports about possible child labor law violations last year before they moved.  I would expect TLC to be better than that but let's face it, the Gosselin's have been their cash cow.

Re: J&K Labor Law Investigation...

  • DH and I were talking about this over the weekend.  I'm wondering what will happen from it.  On the one hand, I would think that TLC would have really looked into this, especially with the popularity of the show.  But I guess they could have just kept going despite issues.

  • I am fully onboard with the whole "it is time for them to end the show...for the sake of their marriage and the well-being of the kids" bandwagon.  But, unfortunately, they probably did not violate any child labor laws.  I heard somewhere (can't remember where) that most of those laws only pertain to child actors and since this is a reality show...the kids are not actors.  It seems to be a loophole.  The law I heard was that child actors are only allowed to "work" 2 days per week for 6 hours.  The way they shoot the show...and Kate's own admission of "the cameras are here all the time"...would appear to violate that, but again the loophole of they are not actors.  It would be the same reason that Jon and Kate are allowed to profit from the show.  Most child acting laws require that any and all monies "made" by the child are to be put in a trust for them.  I think it is supposed to protect them from parents like Kate. Wink

All I have to say at this point is KARMA!  If you are mean and nasty person...someday karma is going to come and bite you in the a$$.  She may be getting what she deserves after all.

  • I am really interested in seeing what comes of this. That is an interesting point about the reality tv vs child actors. I would definitely think that TLC looked into it, but I don't know. Unless they argue that they are the focus of the show and that the kids are just an addition, because they always say that the show is about them and how they raise the kids, but the cameras are still there and the kids are still on them.

  • I think I recall a network getting in trouble a few years back about a children's reality show, something with the labor laws.  It was a show about kids running a town or something???  I don't know if it ever aired or not and what the outcome was with the possible labor law violation.

You would think the TLC's legal dept would have researched all of the laws, since they also have the contract with the Duggar clan and that new one, Table for 12.

Just another twist in the story that's already bad enough...

  • I think the problem in the reality tv vs acting thing is that so many of these "reality" shows evolve to the point that they aren't as real anymore.

I mean The Hills supposedly started out real and now its definitely scripted...the whole appearance of K-Cav and her conveinently sitting next to Justin Bobby at the Speidi wedding was proof of that for me since I read she told MTV she would be willing to hook up with him if necessary.....ewwww.

I mean so much of J&K+8 was probably still scripted since they have all the kids and those cameras and a shooting schedule.

I saw the new US mag at work today and they were basically saying that both Jon & Kate have basically implied that the marriage is all but over.  I think the whole thing is going to get really ugly and the ones who will get screwed the most are the kids who didn't ask to be brought into this circus.

  • Don't mean to burst anyone's bubble, but don't read too much into "investigation."  As the spokesperson alluded, the agency has an obligation to look into every complaint, even if that means taking a cursory look and dismissing an allegation.

Imagine how many whack-jobs have probably called or e-mailed L&I, equally as unsure (or completely unaware) of how the law actually works, but having heard the rumors about child labor law limitations.

Lots of whack-jobs = lots of complaints they have to address.
