We can't get a break

K was offered a job at a university for the Fall, however it's only part time (2 classes).  When she applied for the position it was to be a one year contract and after the one year they would hire the professor on in a tenure track position.  The university is about 2 hours from us so K would commute on the days she teaches.  Well she got the offer yesterday (after no interview, no phone call) but the university has decided not to make a tenure track position so this will just be for 2 classes.  Argh!  Why can't we get a break?  They told her she is their top candidate and the job is hers if she wants it (without even interviewing her!).  We're thrilled she's getting an offer and it is cool that they loved her based on resume alone...but really? Just once can't she get the job she deserves? Two classes might not be worth a 2 hour commute and hotel stays but we'll have to crunch the numbers and see.

It looks like the classes would be Monday and Tuesday so staying the night would probably be easiest.  Particularly in  winter with the possibility of snow storms.

  • ugh. thats definitely dissapointing :(

when does she have to let them know by? any chance more offers will come in by that date?

  • Ugh, how frustrating!  That seems like a lot of trouble for 2 classes.

  • First, props to K...quite the hire!

     Second....the situation totally sucks!

I am so sad for you both. I hope that the numbers crunch in a way that is best. (I am also sending positive vibes that K will get an offer that she is TRULY deserving of!)

She's calling them today to discuss all the details.  We haven't applied too many places since she has been focused on just finishing the dang dissertation - so another offer for this fall isn't likely.  Particularly since the number of open slots in her field fell from 170+ last year to 70+ this year.

  • i see Sad

well i really hope the number crunching can work out (hmmm, maybe they can offer her on-campus housing for the overnight?).

and congrats to her on landing the offer - it really speaks highly!

  • That is so disappointing! I hope the number crunching works out. :-(
  • OME J- that's great news for K. Let me know what she decides to do...as i told you before I know people with apts in that area and I can see if someone wouldn't mind putting her up or subletting or something....

  • That's fantastic that she got the offer (!!), but what a bummer that it wasn't a better one. I like the on-campus housing idea... Surely they have an empty dorm room somewhere (hopefully in a grad student apt complex). It might be kinda crappy for K, but the money you'd save not having to get hotel rooms might make it worth it. If not, and you do go the hotel route, maybe you can work out a contract with the hotel for a less-than-usual rate. I would think that a regular, guaranteed Monday stay would be worth them giving you a good deal.

    Good luck!
