So since the ground sucks down here I'm planting a garden in pots. This farmer guy that I know up in Gainsville grows everything and I mean everything in pots. So I looked it up and its really common, and it grows really great produce. Your plants get bigger, and produce more veggies. What a great idea huh? This way you can grow them on your patio, or in your house as long as they get 6 hours of sunlite a day. It saves you from having to weed, and keeps the bugs off and your plants have better drainage.
Shirley I thought of you when he told me this because I remember you saying that youre starting a garden. Well here is another way to grow them. GL.
Re: I'm going to start a garden
That is such a great idea! I love gardens but have been slacking lately. I really should start one again too.
What are you planning on planting?
Umm lets see. I know tomatoes and potatoes, lettuce, cucumber, peas, squash, hot peppers. thats all I know right now. what else should I do? Carrots too.
I might get a fruit tree but I'm not sure. I also think I want to try water melons. I might need a raised bed for that and other melons.
Wow! That sounds awesome. I have one persian lime tree and one anon (not sure if anyone knows what that is...but no fruit yet and two years of waiting), I've grown tomatoes and now I have culantro.
I like the idea of squash and peppers and tomatoes again
How quick do they grow and how demanding are they?
I know that Home Depot and Lowes have plants already started of Tomatoes and Peppers so they shouldn't take to long. The squash I am going to start from seed so that will take a little longer. The Tomatoes and peppers you'll have to have a stake or something to hold them up. Maybe not so much the pepper plant but the tomato. My cousin has a pepper plant on her patio and she doesn't do anything with it just lets it grow. so I don't think they are too demanding. I think the tomato plant is the biggest pain just because you have to make sure its stays standing.
I also know that lettuce regrows quickly, You pluck the leafs and it grows back.
Yay for growing a garden. I love my garden and since it has been raining a ton everything is starting to sprout. I have two little tomatoes on my tomatoe tree. I also have some green beans sprouting out. I also have parsley, thime, and green onion. It is exciting watching everything grow.
Redwings.... actually dh suggested that we plant in pots but I opted to try using the ground first and see how that works out. You know instead of using pots you can also use plastic bins. they hold more and you won't have a bunch of pots every were. I did buy two medium plastic bins just in case, I wanted to try and grow my garden that way. Good luck on the garden let me know if you need any help. It is realatively easy once you get it started. You see it is a ton of fun when you see your little ones grow. LOL

Lettuce is super, super easy, but it's a cool-weather vegetable. It gets bitter and bolts (goes to seed) when the temps reach above 85 (or a little warmer if the pots are kept in the shade).
Peppers love the heat, and they're very easy. I haven't had to use stakes to support those plants, but I know the variety I;ve grown is specifically for containers.
Tomatoes can be very demanding. My problem was keeping ahpids off them. I grew them on a screened-in balcony, though, so direct air might be better for that. The plants can get out of control fast; pluck the suckers off between the main stem and the branches, otherwise you'll have a forest of tomato branches. If you pick varieties that are well-suited to this climate, though, you'll have very good luck.
E-mail me anytime if you have questions (m_zavala07 at yahoo dot com). I can't wait to hear how it goes!
Can you explain this a little more cuz I have a ton of branches how do I know which ones to cut off?

yes please explain. I need to know this to because I am going to get mine started this weekend.
Shirley I was going to use those big plastic pots that trees come in? Or I thought about for my potatoes I was going to get a big ruber maid bin and drill holes in the bottom for drainage and use that just for the potatoes. Do you and MJZ think thats a good idea for potatoes and carrots? They grow under the dirt right, so I would need at least 6 or 10inches right?
