I was just reading your blog and you got me curious about a CSA? what is it? And how does it work?

Re: **janet**

  • Hi! CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. I am on the What's Cooking board a lot, and several people on there use them, which is how I got interested.

Basically, you buy produce directly from the farm every week. You sign up for a share and each week you get a basket of fresh produce (as in, picked that day). I googled "CSA + Rancho Cucamonga" when I was looking to join one, and I found Amy's Farms in Ontario. I pay them $20 a week and every Wednesday I pick up a huge basket of produce (enough to feed 3-4 people a week) at the Claremont Street Fair.

It's a lot of fun because you don't know what you are getting until you get there and it has really helped me increase the amount of veggies we eat without increasing our grocery budget. I pretty much don't buy produce at the store anymore, except for a few things here and there...but I also have a container garden on my patio of veggies. :)

I don't know if they are still taking sign ups, but you can contact Amy's Farms at csa@amysfarm.com or their website is http://amysfarm.com/amysfarmproduce.html .

And thanks for checking out my blog! That is always exciting to hear! I will be updating it soon with my trip to SF. :)

  • Thanks, it looks really interesting. I just found one in my area with a bunch of pick up locations. I'm going to talk to my Dh and see if he wants to try it.?Unfortunately?the one in my area is little pricier than yours but they offer a trial mth membership so we might try that.

So besides the swiss chard what else did you get this week??

    ?

  • I wonder if there is one close to Riverside.

  • I just checked and we don't have one near us. :(  Dh would have loved the concept.

    ??

  • I am glad you found one near you! I would def reccommend doing the trial. My husband was hesitant at first too, but I just went ahead and signed up, and now he loves it.

This week we got swiss chard, 5 summer squash (I picked 3 patty pans, one yellow crock-neck squash and one zucchini. They also had a head of broccoli instead of squash), a head of lettuce, a bag of arugla, a bunch of rainbow carrots, a bunch of basil, and a mesh bag full of green beans. I feel like I got more, but I can't remember.

The week before we got swiss chard, a bunch of radishes, a  bunch of rainbow carrots, a bag of arugula, two mini heads of lettuce, a bag of roasting veggies, and something else.

We get A LOT of food considering there are only 2 of us. We had 3 diff veggies with dinner last night!

  • so you only get veggies no fruit?

And yes I do keep up with your blog and everything looks so good. I don't really cook so I haven't tried any of the recipes but I do drool over your pics :)?

  • Kat- thanks, I didn't think to look to see where the pickup locations were.

Right now it is just veggies. I think there will be more fruit as fruit gets ripe. I am going to ask about that tomorrow.

that could be why yours is cheaper than the one over here. it includes both fruit and veggies. But I talked to my DH and he's really interested so we are going to do the mth trial and see how it goes?

  • So I asked about fruit at last night's CSA...they said not for a few years. The fruit trees are too young to produce right now.

I am def going to use that natural light. Sometimes I put my food on top of the wine rack that is right under a window...that helps improve the picture quality. I am also thinking about building a light box.
