Vet and pet insurance recs?

We just got a yorkie 2 weeks ago.  It?s about 9 ? weeks now and we need to take him to the vet again for his shots.  Anyone have any recommendations for a good, reliable, affordable vet in the Plano/Frisco area?

Also, I heard it?s a good idea to get pet insurance during the first year because some will pay for all the shots and stuff.  Also, since our yorkie is a little smaller than a normal toy, he may get sick more often, etc.  Anybody have any recs for that?  I?m totally clueless on pet insurance companies as this is my first puppy.  TIA!  I appreciate it.

Re: Vet and pet insurance recs?

  • We opted to not get insurance for our two adult dogs, but ones I've looked into are:

Pets Best Insurance (more like a discount plan)

     VPI

     Banfield (Pets Mart Vets only)

Not sure how far in Plano/Frisco you are from McKinney, but I was very pleased with our experience @ SPCA.

  • I LOVE my vet! They are at Spring Creek and Coit. I see the female vet, Dr. Rogers. She is wonderful with Jade.

  • I LOVE our vet. Its on Hebron and Marsh, just West of the Shops at Willow Bend. It is All Creatures Veterinary Clinic and all the doctors are great. You can visit the website at allcreaturesonline.com.

  • We take our 2 labs to Banfield in McKinney...the Petsmart off 380 and 75 and have never had a problem with them, they are soooo good to our dogs.  We pay 38.00 a month for both dogs (17 a piece) for their insurance.  We don't pay for the shots and checkups throughout the year, so for us it really pays off.

We do this for our dog too. The great thing about the puppy plan is that is also covers spaying or neutering, which is very expensive without the plan. For dogs older than a year, you also have the option of paying an extra $8 a month to have the plan include a professional teeth cleaning each year. Our dog has had lots of unexpected health problems and the plan has saved us a fortune.

  • We have VPI pet insurance for our 3 year old chocolate lab.  We've had it since he was 4 months and haven't had any problems.  This year they did change their policies a bit but I think now it gives you more flexibility to chose what is important to you.  We haven't had any major health problems with Brier (thank goodness) but we do have the cancer rider on our insurance.  I look at insurance as it is for emergencies.  He has been hit by a car before and thank goodness the car wasn't moving fast but I know we have the insurance for emergencies if ever needed.  It does cover shots, tests, teeth cleaning, etc.
  • We take our five year old boxer to Banfield in Frisco! They are incredible! You pay monthly, and get discounts on all of the medicine, and procedures. With our plan, she gets "free" blood work done every so often, as well as a check on all of her organs, AND one teeth cleaning per year! We had to go with this one because she is prone to cancer (has had more than three cancerous lumps removed), and we want to stay on top of things. I say "free" because you pay monthly, but the savings really add up!
