House Poll (stolen from philly)

I saw this on Philly and thought it would be interesting to see what people answer over here! This should be realistic - not like your dream house with money as no object.

1. What area/town would you like to permanently settle in?

2. 1 bathroom vs. 2, but does the fact that this is your forever house, where you will maybe raise children, affect your decision?

3. How many sq ft do you think you need?

4.  What are the 3 most important things the house must have?

Re: House Poll (stolen from philly)

  • 1. What area/town would you like to permanently settle in? Although I think we'll be very happy in our upcoming house for many years I don't forsee if being our forever home. If we stay in NJ I say we'll end up in Haddonfield. I love the historic downtown feel. Otherwise I can see us abandoning NJ for MD.

    2. 1 bathroom vs. 2, but does the fact that this is your forever house, where you will maybe raise children, affect your decision? At the very least 1.5 bathrooms but I would like 2.5. One master bath, one upstairs for kids/guests and a powder room downstairs.

    3. How many sq ft do you think you need? I love small houses and hate to clean. We're in about 1,400sq/ft now and I think its perfectly doable for a family because of its good layout. Our next house has ~1,700, so anywhere between 1,500-2,000 sq ft would be ideal for me.

    4.  What are the 3 most important things the house must have?

Great big yard with lots of trees, garage and a walk up attic.

  • 1. We'll probably always be in the south NJ area. Ideally, I'd like to live in Haddonfield, Haddon Heights, or Tavistock :) But with taxes being out of control in Camden County, I think we're leaning more towards Mantua.

    2. At least 2 baths. We have 1 now, and I'd love to at least have an additional half bath. Like Eva, I hate cleaning, though, so if there are more than 3 toilets for me to clean, I'll go crazy. And yes, kids are a factor in # of bathrooms.

    3. The smaller, the better. I don't know what our square footage is now, but I don't think I want more than 2,000.

    4. Character (I like older houses), privacy (via big lot and/or lots of trees), basement (we don't have one now!)

  • 1. What area/town would you like to permanently settle in?Not sure yet...probably somewhere north either Morris/Essex/Union County or somewhere closer to the shore.  My H would like to be in commuting distance to NYC.

    2. 1 bathroom vs. 2, but does the fact that this is your forever house, where you will maybe raise children, affect your decision? I have to have 2 bathrooms.  I would consider buying a home with 1 bathroom if it had the room to add another.

    3. How many sq ft do you think you need? the more the better, but looking in N. Jersey, it is slim pickings!

    4. What are the 3 most important things the house must have?

    1. Location- Good neighborhood/school district

    2.  At least 3 bedrooms

    3. Basement -preferably finished or  at least the potential to finish it

  • 1. What area/town would you like to permanently settle in? We really like the area we're in now - Swedesboro/Woolwich. I'd also move to East Greenwich or Mullica Hill, South Harrison. My mom is my daycare - so we need to stay close to her. Plus it's more affordable than the other towns I like (Haddonfield, Collingswood).

    2. 1 bathroom vs. 2, but does the fact that this is your forever house, where you will maybe raise children, affect your decision? I would like at least 2.5 baths. We have 2 full baths now, and 2 half (b/c it's a 3 level home). I like having our own bathroom in our master bedroom.

    3. How many sq ft do you think you need? we have about 2100 right now and I think that's fine. I don't really need a huge house. I just want big closets and storage and I'll be fine! I'm even considering a rancher for our next house b/c I'm sick of steps! haha.

    4.  What are the 3 most important things the house must have?

    - a decent size yard and the neighbors aren't on top of you

    - a great kitchen - I like to cook and I love modern kitchens. I'd really like a double oven and a nice sized island.

    - at least 3 bedrooms, but preferably 4

We're in a ranch now, and we're hoping to always have a ranch. We love the fluidity of it and the open floor plan.

  • EB - I grew up in a ranch and thought I'd always wanted a 2 story home. But I do like the flow of a ranch (if it's set up right). plus you can always find one with a finished basement!

I have a feeling we'll end up with a cookie-cutter development house though b/c there are lots of those around here and neither of us are handy.

I really like Cape Cod style homes, too. There are quite a few in this area that I have my eye on. I always say I hope one goes up for sale when we're ready to buy : )

  • 1. What area/town would you like to permanently settle in?

If we stay in NJ then the Morristown area, we'll probably end up in upstate NY or Austin Texas though because of H's job.

    2. 1 bathroom vs. 2, but does the fact that this is your forever house, where you will maybe raise children, affect your decision? I am a firm believer of at minimum 2 toliets.  2.5 bathrooms is ideal for me though.  One in the master bedroom one upstairs for guests and a half bathroom downstairs because I'm to lazy to walk upstairs everytime I have to pee.

    3. How many sq ft do you think you need?  I have no idea.  More then I have now though.

    4.  What are the 3 most important things the house must have?

     - a huge fenced in yard for the pooch

      - a huge kitchen with amazing cabinets

      - master bedroom suite.  swoooon

  • 1. What area/town would you like to permanently settle in?

    Haddon Township

    2. 1 bathroom vs. 2, but does the fact that this is your forever house, where you will maybe raise children, affect your decision?

YES. We will not get another house that doesn't have AT LEAST 2.5 bathrooms. We have 1.5 not and I HATE it.

    3. How many sq ft do you think you need?

About 2500 (including full finished basement)

    4.  What are the 3 most important things the house must have?

    1) Master bedroom suite complete with shower, sunken tub (prefer jacuzzi) and 2 sinks,

    2) a large kitchen with an electric stove, and

    3) a finished basement (for a play room).

  • 1. What area/town would you like to permanently settle in? Definitely NJ.  We both really love the Mount Laurel area, so probably there.

    2. 1 bathroom vs. 2, but does the fact that this is your forever house, where you will maybe raise children, affect your decision? OMG, 2!!  We need 2 with just the two of us!

    3. How many sq ft do you think you need? 2,000 would be good...more would be a pain unless we had a cleaning lady :P

    4.  What are the 3 most important things the house must have?  Does this count bedrooms/baths?  If so, 3 or 4 bedrooms, 2+ baths, basement.  If not, basement, garage, good layout.

  • 1. What area/town would you like to permanently settle in? One of two options: somewhere just north of where we are (Swedesboro, EG, West Deptford) or MD. Depends on tons of factors.

    2. 1 bathroom vs. 2, but does the fact that this is your forever house, where you will maybe raise children, affect your decision? H and I are high maintenance. Definitely at least 2.

    3. How many sq ft do you think you need? I honestly have no idea, but I'd say at least 2000

    4. What are the 3 most important things the house must have?

    1. Location (schools, taxes, proximity to work, etc.)

    2. Some space to move around -- yard, etc.

    3. A good kitchen or the money to make it one since I'm spoiled now.

  • 1. What area/town would you like to permanently settle in?  I'm not really sure.  Ideally, I would like to leave Jersey.  That won't happen, though, until we can get custody of H's son.

    2. 1 bathroom vs. 2, but does the fact that this is your forever house, where you will maybe raise children, affect your decision?  2.5.  Just like someone else said...master & guest upstairs and powder room downstairs.  We only have 1.5 right now and it's rough sharing with the kids.

    3. How many sq ft do you think you need?  More than 1100 because that's about what we have now and we're slowly but surely outgrowing this house.

    4. What are the 3 most important things the house must have?  Good schools, decent sized rooms/closets, basement and garage.

  • 1. What area/town would you like to permanently settle in? DH and I love the area we are in now so I can see us settling in Swedesboro, Logan Twp, Woolwich area. We would ideally like to build our forever home since building our first home was such a great experience.

    2. 1 bathroom vs. 2, but does the fact that this is your forever house, where you will maybe raise children, affect your decision? Atleast 2 bathrooms. Right now we have 2.5 and love it!

    3. How many sq ft do you think you need? Atleast 2500.

    4.  What are the 3 most important things the house must have?

    - a really nice kitchen with a double oven, a nice size yard for the kids to play in, and a good school district.

  • 1. What area/town would you like to permanently settle in? Logan Twp where we are now or maybe East Greenwich.

    2. 1 bathroom vs. 2, but does the fact that this is your forever house, where you will maybe raise children, affect your decision? At least 2 bathrooms. Right now we have 2.5 and sometimes that's not enough!

    3. How many sq ft do you think you need? I don't even know what I have now, but whatever it is, we need more.

    4.  What are the 3 most important things the house must have?

Location (school district, yard, etc); basement since we don't have one now and could really use it; a nicer kitchen than what I've got now
