Packing for Ireland?

Long time, no post!

Work has been 8 shades of crazy with little to no room for fun! Booo!

Anywho, I'm getting ready to pack for Ireland/Scotland. We're going for two weeks with the ILs. I'm so excited you could give me a pair of underpants, one change of clothes, and tell me I'm sleeping in a car the whole time and I'd say, "Awesome! See you there!"

I'm not a jet setter, and I don't get out much. Aside from the basic toiletries, rain proof jacket, good shoes and such, what do/would you bring for a 2 week, mostly B&B staying, lots of walking, driving from town to town kind of trip in Ireland/Scotland?

My ultimate goal is to not pack the kitchen sink and remain as light as possible in the lugging stuff department.

TIA!

Re: Packing for Ireland?

  • i definitely found it helpful to layer clothes wherever i went.  it would be nice one minute and then a storm would roll through and i needed a sweater.
  • Yup, LAYERS!!

Also, an electric converter, if you can find one.  My camera battery ran out on about day 5, and I couldn't plug it in anywhere.

  • Ipod (I can't do long travel without it!) and my cell phone.  I got international calling when I went to Paris but more importantly I used the alarm on my cell phone while I was there.

Extra memory for your camera...when my parents when to Ireland and Scotland they took thousands of pics.

  • I loved Ireland! I'm going again in July. PPs are right: layers, extra batteries, electric socket converters. Also, I'd bring a second set of sneakers, in case one pair gets wet from the constant rain. You may want to bring a pair of two of long thermal underwear to wear under jeans. It was freezing over there in May when I was there last.

Also, I had a sort of flat fanny pack thing that I wore inside of my shirt that held my passport and some extra cash, just in case. When going from B&B to B&B, I was always worried I'd lose it somehow. I think I got it at WalMart or Bed Bath and Beyond. It was comfortable, and just knowing my stuff was safe made me enjoy the trip more.

    Have a great trip!

  • Finally got your MIL to nail down a date, eh?  That's awesome.  PP's seem to have things pretty well covered, so I don't have any additional suggestions.  Just wanted to say have a great trip!!
  • I haven't been to Ireland, but I have been to 9 other european countries...definitely get a side pack or some kind of bag that crosses your body - it's easier than a backpack and more comfortable/safer than a purse. I just kept my passport & valuables in that because it was right on my body all the time anyway. I also loved my light windbreaker/jacket that wasn't too annoying to carry around. I wouldn't take too many 'summery' clothes, but definitely layers! I carried a pashmina with me everywhere as well. Oh, and a little first aid kit with band aids (for blisters) and tums :)
  • Dress warmly!  AND, don't forget the converter for your hairdryer.  As my mom found out, it can turn into a flamethrower if you don't.
