Teachers - adding G/T certification?

How do I go about getting my G/T certification? I've (finally!!) received my standard certification in EC-4 Gen/ESL and am completely done with my alternative certification program. I'll be teaching 1st next year (pre-k was just not for me - cute! but not for me) and I'd really like to get my G/T cert. Can I just study and take the test? Does my principal have to recommend me to take the test? For all my other tests my ACP had to recommend me. I don't know where to start!

Re: Teachers - adding G/T certification?

  • You can take 30 hours of classes to get a G/T endorsement and then it's a 6 hour refresher every year. ?That's what the teachers I know in my district do for that. ?Usually your district offers the trainings or I'm sure there's stuff available through Region 11.

  • My district was the same as tulips, I believe. You had to take 30 hours of courses to become certified, and the test too I think.?

Not sure if you have this or not, but if not, I recommend getting your ESL cert first. Lots of districts really look favorably upon that cert- my district actually required we all got it (it just required taking the test and they paid for it). I have mine. I looked into the G/T cert as I thought it would be a great thing to teach, but didn't ever finish that process before moving. ?

  • Hey Samantha!  Are you staying in Venus?

I plan to take Sophia to see Tracy next week.  Will Camden stay home w/ you this summer?

  • I am doing the 30 hours this summer, through region 10.  (same as other posts) I too, just got my standard certification and am done with my ACP.  My principal just told me to sign up for the classes and I did, I am sure it will be the same for you.

  • Yeah I have my ESL cert. I had to in order to stay in the district I'm in :)

I was told to do the same, 30 hours of GT then 6 every year after that, but I wasn't sure what that would leave me with... a certification in it? Or just trained in GT?

    Christi - I'll email you :)

  • To my understanding, once I complete the hours I will be able to teach Pre AP Language Arts once I get the training.  Our school has very high standards and wants all ofthe teachers to have the G/T training.  I do not think it is another certification, just something to add on to what you already have.

  • I think with the 30 hrs/6 each year after you are just trained in it- not technically certified and it isn't on your teacher certificate. But your district will know you have it and I am sure if you were to change districts, you could tell them you have the training already.
