TTC and OBGYN Question

My next GYN appointment (annual) is scheduled for august with my current dr-Dr. Ferrara at Associated Women's Healthcare in Plano. However, my DH and I are wanting to start TTC #1 this fall. I guess I'm kind of clueless, but need some advice. How do you know if the dr you have been seeing for GYN issues is the doctor you want for OB? Do you "Shop around", and if so, how do you do that? Do you make actual appointments with doctor's like a medical visit, or do you set up a meeting? I like my current dr-but I don't know how she is with TTC/Pregnancy since I"ve never been there. If anyone has used her or any of the other dr's there let me know your experiences. Also, I think they are affiliated with Med Center of Plano--how is that place for L&D?

If I wanted to "shop around", how would I go about doing that and do you have any recs for female ob/gyn in or around the same area? Thanks so much in advance-i feel like there is so much I need to know.

Re: TTC and OBGYN Question

  • I didn't really shop around either. I liked my GYN, so I just used her. I would just talk to your doctor about your birth expectations (like do you want to go natural, do you want a scheduled c-section, etc.) and see how supportive she is of your desires. Also, I'd go look at hospitals to see which one you want to deliver at. We liked Baylor Frisco (even though we live in Dallas) so we were lucky our dr. delivered there. My dr. came accross as seeming not  as supportive of natural birth as I would have liked, but I think she was just trying to be realistic and I really just stood my ground about it and she did what we wanted in the end.

  • I stayed with my GYN when I got pregnant. I was very happy with her before getting pregnant so I didn't see the need to change. I discussed our TTC plan with her at my annual exam about 6 months before we started TTC. She was supportive and gave realistic advice.

I would suggest discussing your plans at your annual appointment and going from there. If you don't like or agree with what your doctor tells you - look around. Get recommendations from friends and check out the doctor's websites.

    Good luck

  • I really like my gyn so I will be staying with her. I did talk to her about TTC at my annual in Jan but since I already knew I was going to go with her I didn't ask too many questions.

  • I liked my gyn until I got pregnant, and then she was pretty much useless. ?My friend recommened her OB and I love him. ?He's the first male ob/gyn I've been to and I was kind of weirded out about it at first, but he's fabulous.
  • I loved my GYN and trusted her, so I stuck with her. Our 1st pg was a surprise so we didn't even talk about TTC. I'm not really sure what they would even tell you?
  • If you like your doctor, then I would talk to her about what's important to you regarding birth/TTC and see if you like her answers.  How does she feel about natural birth?  Drugs?  How often does she induce/perform c-setions/whatever?  What are her/your thoughts about breastfeeding, circumcision (and does she perform it herself?), etc.  If you like her answers and you're on the same page, there you go.  If not, get some recommendations.

Personally, I LOVE my doctor because we are very much on the same page, but I can totally see how he wouldn't be the doctor for everyone.

  • I never considered shopping around.  I love my gyn and talked to him about ttc at my last appt.  It never even occured to me that people would change doctors.  A couple of my friends had babies delivered by my dr too.

At my last appt when we talked about ttc he told me what vitamins to start taking now.  We also went over what he thought of flying while prego, caffiene, and when we start testing for issues if I don't get prego.  He wants us to try for a year before we start getting tested for issues.  We are half way there, hopefully it won't come to that!

  • Thanks ladies! I am just not sure how much I "love" my doctor...when I have issues she is quick to fix them and I know she is a good doctor...I feel like it is a big decision to make when you choose what doctor will care for your baby while its inside you and who delivers it.

those of you who LOVE your OB/GYNs, who do you see if you don't mind me asking?
