Question for the teachers regarding continued ed

DH hasn't started his continued education credits yet. How many credits does he need to complete in what time period to be able to hold on to his certification. This past year he's been subbing 'cause he was in harrisburg the past few years and didnt want to be in the city. Next year he's long term subbing for the year, so they wont be reimbursing (which means i have to stop taking classes so we can pay for his)

ANYWAY....that was all just a vent. haha. anyway, we're just trying to figure out what he has to get done and by when

TIA!

Re: Question for the teachers regarding continued ed

  • He has 5 years to complete 180 hours. Here is the C&P from the Act 48 website:

All certified educators must then complete every five years 180 hours of professional
development that is related to an area of the professional educator?s assignment or certification
and, if the educator is employed by a school entity, complies with their school entity?s plan.
The 180-hour requirement can be met with six college credits, six credits of continuing
professional education courses, 180 clock hours of continuing professional education, or any
combination of collegiate studies, continuing professional education courses or other programs,
activities or learning experiences equivalent to 180 hours. For the purposes of calculating hours
and credits, one credit of collegiate study or continuing professional education course is
equivalent to 30 hours of continuing professional education.

  • Abbie is right about 6 credits or 180 hours.  www.pattan.net is offering some great trainings and they are free.
  • In addition to the act 48 hours, we thought there was additional amount of college classes needed completed to get permanent certification. Does anyone know what that would be? I'm totally not in this field so i'ts all another language to me.

Oh, you mean towards his Instructional II certificate, right? Here is a website that answers a lot of questions:

24 credits in 6 years to obtain his Level II cert.

ETA:  If I'm not mistaken, the 6 years starts ticking either from point of employment or activation of the Level I cert.  I don't teach in PA (although I do hold a PA cert.), so I'm fuzzy on the details - it's been a while since I've spent any time considering PA's requirements. :)
