If you knew your company was going to do layoffs next week would you have any motivation to do any work knowing there might be a chance you'd be gone?

I'd be reluctant to work since the decisions on who goes is probably already made. Yet I'd work if not working would get be added to the list..

Since they already started the layoffs with the top levels of management already, I think the decision has already been made. It's not that I dont have the motivation to do the important stuff with deadlines, but its the little things like setting up meetings, finalizing reports due in 2 wks, etc that I dont see the point of doing until I know for sure its worth it.
And to make it even harder to motivate myself, for legal reasons, our company doesnt give out references to future employees. Our HR will just confirm your dates of employment but will not give them a recommendation.
More likely than not the decisions have already been made, BUT:
(a) You might not be on the list. In that case, slacking now will just create more work for later; and
(b) If you are on the list, it's a good idea not to burn bridges. Go out with class.
I know for a fact that even though some companies say that legally they can't give out references, good or bad, they still do.
I would work decently well, just not stress over it or worry about getting it all done.
