Just wondered if anyone else felt this way. ?The competition out there is horrible, especially for schools!
Re: Job hunting stinks...
It is really tough right now. I left my corporate job 3 years ago for non-profit and my old company did layoffs in November. I still have friends that are without jobs. I just watched a news report last night that layoffs have begun to slow down, so hopefully that is a good sign.
I hear you on school jobs being tough competition, especially when you don't know someone or have an "in." I am from north jersey and when I moved down here after college with a degree and cert. in elementary ed, I couldn't find a public school job. I ended up taking a position in a small private school for next to no salary just to get experience.
Good luck and try not to get too frustrated yet...you will find something eventually!
Are you stalking njhire.com & njschooljobs.com? I found my new gig for September through one of them. I understand your frustration because I sent out my resume so many times before I even got an interview. It took me a very long to find a job closer to home but my patience finally paid off and yours will too!
I've been spending weekdays at my mom's so I could stay at my teaching job in North Jersey and only coming home to my husband on weekends. But everything works out in the end.
Sometimes openings come up during the school year so don't give up looking if you haven't found something by September. Also, if you can afford it taking a long-term sub position or an aide/assistant might help get your foot in the door.
I hear ya - I'm also trying to get a teaching job right now. I think I've sent my resume to over 20 schools in the area. I'm doing alternate route - so it's even harder. I'm willing to take a long-term sub position if the pay isn't super low - I think it's comparable to a teacher's starting salary right? I don't need the benefits, which is nice.
Thankfully, if I don't find a job I can come back to this one after my maternity leave and just keep looking. Not ideal, but I cant complain.
