Grocery Budget?

Do you have a grocery budget? How much is it? Do you stick with one store, or do you shop around?

We don't have a budget, but the cheaper the better. Today i went grocery shopping and spent $110.75--- I could have spent less if I would have looked in my freezer before I went-duh! I generally shop @ wal-mart or winn dixie for everything but meat. Today i shopped at wal-mart. I bought pretty much everything but meat. I do not like to buy meat any place other then publix. For some reason I just think their meat is fresher....When i got home i opened the freezer and I had like 3 packages of ground beef... uhm hello I bought 3 more today. duh.

I used coupons today....I saved $12.something...

Re: Grocery Budget?

  • we don't have a budget, but we usually go every 2 weeks and spend between 1-2 hundred. last week we spent 175, and with our price chopper membership card and our coupons we saved $45! ?

last weekend when we shopped, we planned out a menu for the week and shopped based on that, plus we saw some good deals (like cans of Campbells soup for a dollar each, so we stocked up on stuff like that.

I can't wait till we move to a place with a bigger kitchen so that I can stock up even more on canned things when there are sales, so we will always have stuff on hand. ?

  • space is part of our problem as well. Our kitchen is lacking when it comes to storage space. Our fridge & freezer are stuffed to the max. I do plan out a menu and shop based on that. I also try to get a few extra canned things while i'm shopping as well.

  • My goal is to spend about $75 or less a week and, unless we are low on meats, I make it.  I shop as many sales as I can and stock up on things like meat when it's on sale and then vacuum seal and freeze it.

I find that keeping basic pantry items stocked at home all of the time (like cans of diced tomatoes, rice, pasta, spices, etc.) helps in meal planning.

  • Oh no Jenna!!! That sux!!! I'm sorry!!!

We don't have a budget and usually just go when we get low on stuff.  I agree, the cheaper the better.  We've been shopping at Kroger's alot because they usually have awesome 10 for $10 things that you can mix and match and also really good buy this pack of meat and get some stuff free type deals.  Last week I went and should've spent $80 and only spent $58, woot woot!! :)

  • We dont have Kroger down here, but when we were thinking about moving to GA i went there a few times with my friend who lives in GA and they do have alot of good deals. Winn Dixie has that 10 for 10...but some of the stuff is cheaper at walmart regardless of the 10 for 10...they tricked me a few times, then i started paying attention more. I am WAY better then I used to be. I used to just buy name brand everything and never look at prices... i used to spend a butt load of money..

  • I don't buy name brand unless it's on sale, i have no shame in kroger brand stuff!! hehe 88 cents a loaf of bread, you seriously can't beat that :) but i have to get my miracle whip, cause there is none other like it
  • I JUST started buying non-name brand bread 2 weeks ago. My first loaf was winn dixie brand and it was fine, then the second was publix. It was fine. I don't know what my fear was. But even still its $1.67 or so.... LOL my friend in GA would text me and say i just bought a loaf of bread for less then a dollar....jealous.

  • I starting using coupons and watching everything we bough everyweek. I cut out grocery bill in half. We could easily go in there and spend 150-200 a week just on junk that we dont need. I try to go shop alone and get just what we need. After coupons usually im ranging between 40-50 a week. Some weeks are better than others. I try to stock up on things when they are a good sale...like the 88cents stuff, or the 10/for10. We have a membership to BJs that we use to get household stuff like every 4-5 months.

The main thing I have found is to watch the sales, and I ask myself if I see something that looks good, do I really need this? Can I wait til is goes on sale? Sometimes I put in the cart then think about it until I am done shopping, most of the time it goes back on the shelf. And never go shopping hungry!

  • we usually spend about $75 a week...we always plan out a menu, and try to just buy what is on the list, though we usually end up getting a couple items that are on sale that we didn't anticipate :)
