So....I'm talkative today
...or it could be that I've not been on here for a while
I was talking to MIL the other day and grandchildren came up. I told her DH & I wanted to try maybe in 5 years or so...
She brushed it off and said she was giving up the thought of grandchildren.
DH's family has a tradition of naming the first son John, but never a junior or senior but always a different middle name. DH's brother is older, thus he's John and FIL is John.
When I told MIL not to worry DH & I will most likely be having kids....
She again brushed it off and said "well John always said he wasn't getting married or having kids, so I've given up that thought"
That's almost insulting, maybe I'm being tooo sensitive(?), it's like saying DH & I giving them grandchildren wont be the same as if it were BIL's kids.
I asked DH about it and he said that it's obvious (and I see it and know) that his brother is the "baby/favorite" of the two....so yeah our kids wont be their "favorites"
I told DH I wasn't feeling comfortable with that. The way my family turned out to be, all the favoritism, negativity, brain-washing.... I don't want them to feel like they aren't good enough for anybody because they're more than good enough (when we have them).
I don't know it just left a sour taste to me.

I'm just sick of getting the "so when you gonna have kids" question...DH's side already has grandkids, so I'm sure I will feel like you do about BIL's kids being the favorites.
I will be the first to have grandkids on my side of the family and that's good enough for me

ditto this...im an only child so if we have a child it will be my parents only grandchild. DH's sister already has 2 kids so its not as big of a deal with my IL's.
