s/o re: waxing

So, I've never had a bikini wax and it seriously frightens me.  On a scale of 1-10 how bad does it hurt, especially for the first time?  (I did have a baby w/o drugs but at the same time, I had a bit more on my mind at the moment, and didn't focus on the pain).

#2)  how do you go about finding a place to go to?  I'm pretty sure none of my girlfriends go and most of them now live out of state.  And this is NOT a coversation I want to have with my SIL, we are not that close

#3)  Just the thought of someone other than a doctor or DH being that close to my lady bits would make me feel 1000 times awkward. How do you deal with that?

Re: s/o re: waxing

  • #1) The pain factor: I get my eyebrows, lip, chin, toes, underarms, and bikini area waxed (or have.)  I've also had my lower legs sugared (not the same - sugaring hurts WAY more, IMO.)  In order of pain (least to most with pain rating in parenthesis): toes/chin (tied at about 2), eyebrows/underarms/bikini (tied for amount at about 5-6), lip (8-9).  My lip makes my eyes tear up EVERY time.  My underarms - this last time - got to about a 9 but I hadn't had them done in over a year!  The bikini - the first time I had it done, hurt.  No lie.  But it wasn't that bad and at least for me, it's fast enough that I can deal with it (less than 20 minutes normally.)

#2)  how do you go about finding a place to go to?  I initially went to THE BEST salon/spa in the area.  Now I'm going to a medical spa/salon (my first time there today).  If you can get a good recommendation for a place (without saying waxing), check them out online.  Or maybe your local board could help you (not sure how active the Chi-town board is.)

#3)  Awkward?  It'd be different if you KNEW the person doing it.  But they're paid to do it just like a doctor.  And every time I've gone, I leave my underwear on and it gets moved as necessary (some places give you disposable undies but whenever I've gone, they just left my own on instead.)  You are NOT in the position with stirrups, so it's not nearly as intrusive. LOL  You are laying down with one leg bent (so your left foot is against your right leg, but your leg is laying down).  Now a BRAZILIAN?  That's alltogether different. Wink  Haven't ventured there myself. LOL

  • Melanie, have you had ANY other waxing done?
  • No, I get my eyebrows threaded.

I did try an at home wax for the space inbetween my eyebrows once, and that was fine, but that area doesn't hurt really.

  • I thought Jen had her eyebrows threaded, so maybe she could give you some idea of the relation of that compared to waxing?  They don't offer threading around here, but it's one hair at a time, right?  Waxing... you can get a couple square inches at a time done.
  • I've wondered these things too Melanie.  My skin is so sensitive that I'm afraid to get it done.  I'd like to try and get my lip/chin waxed though.

My upper lip often gets a pimple or two after having it waxed... from what I've been told, that's common.

  • The first time it hurt the worst...you don't really know what to expect so I think that is why.  Then you just kind of know what to expect.  It does hurt even now, but it's generally pretty quick and you will feel AMAZING when it is all done.  Seriously, it's hard to describe.

    2.  I found a salon near my house that seemed reasonably priced and is clean and nice.

    3.  I wear my undies and she works around them.  I guess I don't care since she is a woman and see's this all day, every day.  My girl just talks to me the whole time so it doesn't seem as akward.

Also, I do get my eyebrows threaded as well and think it hurts more than getting your eyebrows waxed, but its worth it.  Just like this, it hurts for a few minutes but is totally worth it.

Few things: trim before you go (you NEED about 1/4" - 3/8" the first time, but if it's too long, it'll hurt more).  Also, don't walk away expecting to be beautiful and lovely 5 minutes later. LOL  Sorry if this is TMI, but I often notice it's slightly red & bumpy the first several hours afterward.  For me, it goes down, though by the next day.

  • 1.  I've been getting it done since I was 16.  I get really bad razor burn and need to take antibiotics to get rid of it.  The first few times hurt.  As the hair becomes less coarse, it doesn't hurt as much and you can go further between waxings.  I've been getting them done through my pregnancy and it hasn't been bad at all.  I can go 2 months, and even then I probably don't need it but get it done anyway.  You definitely need a healthy growth down there.  Most places I have been to have you wear disposable panties so they don't get wax on yours.  I don't wear any.  Maybe tmi but I get it all taken off.  It does help if you take Advil 30 mins prior to your appt.  And ask them if they can use ice the first few times.  Once they take up the strip with the wax on it, they ice it down so it doesn't sting as much for you.  You are more prone to get ingrown hairs from waxing.  Hovan's Gold is a great product.  You put it on any red or irritated area after you get out of the shower and it draws out ingrown hairs or if it is a pimple that is having a hard time come to the surface within 24 hours.  You can use it every other day.

     2. Ask on your local nest board.  I'm sure there are girls on there that get it done.  Or like Jen said, find a reasonable place that is clean.

    3.  It's really not as awkward as you think.  All the people I have been to have made conversation so you aren't as focused on what is going on.  They want you to be a repeat customer so they are going to make it as comfortable for you as it possibly can be.

  • Thanks for the tips ladies.  I'm still on the fence about doing it.  I know DH would probably appreciate it more than what I can do with an electric razor.  I get bad razor burn from the regular razors, and I'm afraid that waxing will be just as bad.
