Anyone switch careers to become a teacher?
How did you go about it and what all is involved? I have my bachelor's and masters in social work, but I'm looking to change fields. Just tossing around the idea and I'm curious what it takes to get the teacher cert. Thanks!

Re: Anyone switch careers to become a teacher?
I did alternative certification also. I went through Mountain View College Teacher Training Academy.
I had to take classes on Saturdays at Mountain View and take the TeXeS Content and Pedagogy and Professional Responsibility tests.
I will tell you that I did the Early Childhood - 4th grade generalist first. It was HARD to find a job in the metroplex because EC-4 generalist teachers are a dime a dozen around here. I went back and took 4th - 8th generalist. I found a position at a charter school teaching 5th grade. After my first year, I was fully certified. I just finished my 2nd year and am looking for a position in a public school system closer to my house.
There are quite a few school districts that do not take "alternative cert." teachers. I don't know why, they just don't.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do!!
My degree is in social work as well. I am going through Texas Teachers to get my alternative certification. They are really great about helping you find which subjects you want to teach and suggesting others that might make you more marketable. The classes aren't too bad either. I finished all of my classes, so now I'm just looking for a job. Check out their website and you'll be able to have a better understanding of the process. www.texasteachers.org
