Sam's or Costco?

Which do you have and which do you like better? For those with Costco cards - Do you just get one card with membership or can you add a family member? I know that with Sam's you can get two cards for people in the same family. Does Costco do the same? Or do they ever have "sales" on their membership? Right now Sam's is giving gift cards away to ppl to join so I'm just trying to decide which is better and which would save me more money..

Edit: I have looked it up online, but the link to open more info on Costco membership freezes up this crappy computer every single time, so I can't read it. Just clarifying that I am capable of looking online, it just won't open for me!! Wink

Re: Sam's or Costco?

  • I don't know if is Costco offering deals but I love them. Mainly because they have a ton of Organic options and they have good deals on quality things. We have the executive membership where the membership pays for itself or they give you a credit. Lets see if this link helps. We have the Costco American Express as well and you get cashback on this as well.

We do share the membership with Sandro's parents. They have a Sam's Card so we pay for the Costco one and they pay for the Sam's one. That way both our families have a card for each. It works out great. Plus we get the cashback on whatever they spend. ;)  However, we haven't used the Sam's card yet. We just set this up a few weeks ago.

To me they both have good qualities it all depends on which is closer to you. Costco is closer to us and has all the stuff we need.

  • Costco rocks.. I think we pay $50-$75 a year for the both of us. I love their wine selection, they also have higher quality products than Sams, IMO...
  • I like both of them but right now we have been going with Costco - both J and I have a card and we have the Costco American Express card, which I love and the cashback is nice.

But I can't tell you how much the membership is or if they run promotions on memberships, J takes care of all that stuff - it gives me a headache

  • Hmm I think I'm leaning towards Costco now! My mom already has a Sam's card so I can always go whenever she goes. I may see if my sister wants to get a Costco one then we could split the cost..
  • We've always had Sam's.  It's closer to us than Costco, which is probably the biggest factor.  I have my set items that I get from them - cleaning products, paper products, organic salad, milk, cheese from the deli, dinner rolls from the bakery, wine, some toiletries, vitamins, some otc meds.  I feel like I save a fair amount money-wise, plus it's nice to not have to go to the grocery store so often so I'm saving time too.  I've heard that Costco has a better wine selection, but I'm fine with what I can get from Sam's.  I think the Sam's membership is a little cheaper too.  They have a cash-back Discover if that's something you're interested in.

  • Just an FYI on the splitting cards, at least for Sam's - technically the 2 cards you get are for people that live in the same household.  It's not always enforced, but that's the policy.

My sister and I are living in the same house now, so we're golden! That's why I was thinking about doing it Smile

  • Costco!  Yes, you do get two cards for the $50 membership.  We do what Mrs.Sandro does - exec. membership ($100) + the Costco AmEx.  Both give cash back checks once/year.  It's closer for us but I also think it's better quality than Sams.  If your mom has a Sams membership, then I'd definitely go w/ Costco.

We prefer Costco and haven't had a Sam's membership in years. We also do the $100 executive account just because we buy SO much there and that way we get a % back at the end of the year. We just got ours and it was enough to pay for this year's membership and we would still have a bit left after that.We buy all of Hudson's diapers there and used to buy formula there when he was a baby as well as many other food items, etc. We've purchased electronics, tires, furniture pieces, etc. from Costco as well and have always been very pleased with the quality and service. Totally better than Sam's IMO.
  • Costco - no doubt.

I was actually *just* thinking about you yesterday!

  • We only had Sam's in Lubbock - so thats where we went.  When we moved back here and my Mom took us to Costco... no more Sam's trips for us!!

Once Mom stops letting me go with her to Costco for FREE we will pony up the dough and get our own membership. haha :-)

  • I only went to Sam's in the states b/c it was closer and that is what my parents had a membership to, and I'd go w/ my mom.

Over here in Japan, belive it or not, there is a Costco actually! We aren't members yet, but I plan on getting a membership after lil' bit is born, b/c I think we will save quite a bit buying diapers there (although I'm going to try to use the Japanese diapers- they are soooo soft and cheaper than the US ones- it's just hit or miss as to if they will fit your kid right).
