Birth Control post baby

What do you/are you planning to use for birth control?  I was on the pill and then the NuvaRing for a very long time, and while it's very convenient, I would prefer not to use hormones anymore.

Does that leave us with just condoms and charting?  Ugh...

  • Yup.  We're doing the condoms/avoid thing.  Sooo much fun.
  • What about an IUD?  Do they give off hormones?

  • Condoms for us. I don't like the idea of using hormonal BC while breastfeeding, and I don't want an IUD. Diaphragms and sponges and such aren't that effective so we're sticking with condoms. My husband hates it.

  • I believe there are some IUD's that do give off hormones and some don't.  I know I don't want to take the pill again and I'm a little iffy about an IUD so I don't know.  Right now we are using condoms.  Which I guess if we start ttc again in the fall then I'm not going to worry about another form of BC for now.

  • I'm convinced that my minor endo was the final stumbling block to conceiving. Certain types of BCP prevent endo from growing, so I think I'll ask if there's any kind of BCP that is safe while breastfeeding that also keeps endo at bay. I'm thinking probably not, but it's worth a shot. Assuming I get through the next few weeks with my sanity intact, I'd like to try for baby #2 in a year or so.

  • I didn't want to use hormones either. Or condoms. So we tried pulling out... hahahaha.... ya didn't work so well :P

I am going on somthing this time around for sure. It sucks that I have to get my hormones screwed with, but it's better then having another baby.

  • Since I decided against geting a tubal ligation during my C/S, DH and I have decided to try an IUD for a couple of years and then he will probably have a vasectomy after that.
  • My OB prescribed me the mini/micro pill b/c she said it's ok while breastfeeding, but I didn't feel comfortable taking hormones while breastfeeding anyhow.

We're currently using pull&pray plus spermicide.

Not 100% reliable, but we hopefully don't do it enough to get pregnant. That and I hope that my breastfeeding is keeping my ovulation at bay for now. I haven't had a period yet.

EDIT: I realized this was a stupid statement: "but we hopefully don't do it enough to get pregnant"

Duh I realize it only takes once, but I'm thinking, how many times a cycle do we actually do it, plus I'm pretty sure I'm not having"cycles" right now. But it's a gamble

  • I was on the mini/micro pill for a while, even though they said it did not do anything to the milk supply, I was worried and stopped taking it, we also did the pull and pray.  As of late, we are TTC so we are not doing anything.

NAT:  You can still ovulate I think when you are breastfeeding without getting a cycle, that is how so many girls end up preggers again, but I could be totally out in left field with that one.

  • Up until 7 months post partum when we started TTC again, I just used my usual charting techniques (Creighton model, so no annoying BBT temping or anything) to keep an eye on my cycle.  We don't seem to be particularly fertile anyways, so I didn't have any concerns.
  • Abstinence.  LOL

We actually use condoms...but honestly.....we've only maybe done it 10 times in 10 months....maybe 15 (but that would be a stretch), so pretty much it has been abstinence....we've both been WAY too tired.  My period hasn't come back yet, but I think I may be ovulating again....

     LMAO!!!!  So true!!!!

I forgot to mention in my response:

Have baby that gets up 5-6 times a night until she is 9 months old....hence have DH sleep in spare bedroom in the basement 4 nights a week....

lol!  This sounds like the perfect method for me!

  • I did go on the mini pill but stopped after a few weeks because I did find my supply dropped so we used condoms.  After this baby we are likely done so DH is going to go in for a vasectomy, however I am trying to convince him to "freeze" some in case we change our mind, he is concerned about the "storage costs" though LOL!
Proud Mama to two sweet kiddos.
  • We're same at Nat, withdrawal along with spermicide foam you can buy at the drugstore. I'm never going back on the pill, going off of it made my system all wacky. We also don't have sex a whole lot, but I also watch my cervical mucous too to know when it's probably not the best time.

Condoms are irritating to my skin so we don't really use them. Since I've got a semi- period (it's shorter than it was pre-baby so I think the hormones and BFing are still making it a bit off) I can tell when it's not a good time in my cycle.

Of course, nothing but abstinence is 100% effective. But it seems to work. If I get pregnant again, it wouldn't be a huge deal, but it's not like we're trying to go out of our way to have another baby.

Once we have our 2nd child, we'll be done, so I've gotta convince hubby to get the whole snip snip..but he's really not into it yet. ha ha..

What is the Creighton model and how does it work?

Oh, yes, that approach works, too! (For several months, my husband had to sleep in the guest room with the baby - and, once he was moved to his crib, the monitor - because I couldn't sleep *at all* if I could hear the baby. I'm hoping to be less freaked out this time around, but I doubt I'll pull it off.)

  • I'm back on the pill, Tricyclen Lo. Didn't occur to me to find another method of birth control since it's always been the pill for me with no problems.

  • I use the charting method for breastfeeding, but I may try the method Blondie is using if I can find somewhere to learn it here.
