s/o question re:birth control - why no pill?

I was just wondering why so many of you don't like taking bcp? I'm just curious because I've been on (and off it, obviously!) since I was 19 and eventhough I've been on a few different ones I can't say I've ever had any real problems. Is it just super problematic for a lot of women? Am I one of the 'lucky' few that doesn't really have any problems while being on bcp?

Re: s/o question re:birth control - why no pill?

  • Ditto. I went on it as a teenager because of vicious cramps and heavy periods, and stayed on it without any trouble until we started TTC. I don't want to take it while nursing, but am not opposed to going back on afterwards, especially because of my latex allergy. But, given my age, I'm not sure whether BCP would be advisable.
  • I didn't have any problems while I was on it solid for about 7 years. However, once I came off of it I felt like a completely different person. Better mood, more energy, I had a sex drive again, etc.

  • I've been pretty fortunate too...in that I never had issues while being on BCP. I switched to an IUD for a while but apparently the hormones in BCP stabilize the highs & lows in my mood. I never thought it made a difference but just being off for a couple of months recently I noticed the change big time. The only think I really don't like besides for the added weight is the lower sex drive (DH isn't too pleased with that either).
  • even though DH felt I had an increased sex drive, I felt sluggish and no myself... I was only on them for 8 months before coming off and trying other things... DH and I have now decided on the npm and are very happy with it... I feel so empowered and in control... to know I don't need "drugs" to do a job I can so easily do myself!
  • I just don't like the idea of being on hormonal BC for years and years.
  • I don't want to be on it while nursing

  • I just find that my emotions get all out of whack and I don't feel like myself when I am taking hormones.  Although I had few side-effects from the NuvaRing.  I just don't like putting my body through that.

  • It's really interesting to see how the pill affects women differently. I do prefer to be on the Lo pill because I think it's better for my body. Sex drive, weight gain, etc never seemed to be side effects for me. Like I said I never really considered any other form. I was on it for nearly 12 years, went off it and boom - got preggers right away. So I figured I'd just go back on. Until dh gets the snip of course ;-)

  • I also don't like the idea of being on hormonal BC for years and years. Plus, when I did try a couple varieties for a year, I had the worst migraines constantly. I wasn't myself. It wasn't worth it. Plus, it's not 100 percent effective anyway, and I could easily miss pills.

This exactly!  I didn't really know I had a problem with it until I was off of it and I felt like a completely different person.

  • I never had any problems/side effects while I was on the pill, but I can't help but wonder if BCP contributed to my fertility difficulties.

Really, if you think about it, BCP has been popular among women in recent decades, and infertility rates have been continuing to rise in recent decades.  Could the two be related?  I have no clue, maybe a part of it is because of all the other chemicals we're exposed to in our generation.  Or maybe society is simply talking about infertility more than it used to because women are no longer too embarassed to admit they have fertility difficulties.

Anyways, I figure why take the chance that BCP or other hormones could mess up my body.  So we use natural family planning.  As an aside, while I am the daughter of two pharmacists, and sister to another, I still avoid taking prescription medication unless I have to.

  • I had a lot of trouble finding a BCP that agreed with my body.

I have tried so many, and only ONE works. OrthoTriCyclen

My OB prescribed me Alesse for right now, but when I took Alesse many years ago, I gained a chunk of weight and I got chronic (TMI) yeast infections. Hormones mess with me big time.

I also don't want to be on BCP while nursing.

I plan on nursing well after DD's first birthday, probably until around 18 months or so, and we want to TTC just after her second bday, so it's pointless to go on the pill for just a few months (seeing that it takes a while for your body to adjust).

  • I didn't really have any problems while on it per se, but have noticed since going off that my moods are less erratic, I have less headaches, and I actually have a sex drive.

I would have to think long and hard about going back on the pill.

  • My biggest one, even thought I had been on and off for 8 years (mostly on though) I was always forgetting to take them!

After that is was the sex drive 100%.  DH was lucky if he got any once a month.  And that was a good month.

This, and because of religious beliefs. ?(I always feel like I have to add: ?well informed and carefully thought out religious beliefs)?

We've been doing NFP for almost 4 years, and no oopsies!?

  • What is NFP?

I was on the pill for probably 8 years. It worked great for me and I had minor side effects. It did cause me to have a very low sex drive which is why I would prefer not to go back on it.

  • I didn't want to interfere with milk production or pass on hormones....I also liked not having a period for 2 years between being pg and nursing (even managed to get pg again without having one).

That said, I didn't have any side effects when taking it.  My only problem was that I got pg with Sloane while taking it.  I am seriously considering an IUD at the moment because I really want to wait until Sloane is in school before we have #3.

  • Natural Family Planning

bcp = low sex drive for me too. :(

  • I decided to go off the pill a few years ago.  I started taking it in my teens to help with acne and such, but I am super duper forgetful when it comes to taking pills.  I also found that when on BCP I always felt sick when I got up in the morning, no matter what time of day I took the pill.

So DH has suffered with condoms, but I think I will eventually get an IUD.  I'm putting it off until we decide when we're going to start trying for #2.

This. I had heard that the sex drive comes back once off BCP, but Adam didn't want condoms or to do NFP so we waited and he and I were amazed the changes to me when I went off, my moods were better, sex was way better... I felt mre connected to myself. But I never realized I was msising that when I was on the pill. I'm not sure about going back on it. We haven't had that talk yet...

  • After coming off the pill I was a wreck. It's an emotional roller coaster for atleast 2 months. After we had Skyla I did the Mirena IUD which I hated. After we had the twins I got a copper IUD, no hormones and fairly reliable. I am pretty happy with this form actually. After the next baby I'm not sure what we're going to do. I would prefer to chart and use a barrier method on fertile days maybe a diaphragm? I do not want to get my tubes tied and I don't think he wants to be snipped, so this is the best way for us to be hormone free and with a form of birth control. I thoroughly enjoy having a sex drive and the pill squashed that pretty hard.
