Childhood bedroom: old letters (including "luv")

I am visiting my parents and I just cleaned out my drawer full of letters. I had a few penpals and when I moved from Red Deer after grade 7 (and before the Internet) I wrote a couple friends there for a few years.

I found a letter signed "luv" from a guy who kissed me at summer camp when I was 14, he even put a stick if cinnamon gum, and a 2nd empty wrapper in the envelope.  How cheezy!!!

It seems so weird to me now that he is on my facebook, and so are many of my friends from Red Deer. I doubt he even remembers writing the letter it's so long ago!!!

P.S. Dani did you used to live in Hamilton??? I Had a penpal with your name in Hamilton who really liked Backstreet Boys LOL

Did many of you have pen pals? Do you keep old love letters / luv letters from past boyfriends?? It just seems weird now, but also weird to throw out something I've had for so long.

Re: Childhood bedroom: old letters (including "luv")

  • I was penpals with a cousin I have in England who I've never met, and another girl who I met at my parent's friends street party, but we don't still write.  I never kept any letters or anything.  I guess I'm not sentimental like that.

  • Hilarious!

I have kept a few - some are too funny. I even have one with the "will you go out with me? check the box - yes or no"

haha LOVE IT. I'm so embarrassed also knowing some of the letters I've written!! Hopefully those boys threw away their letters a LONG time ago!!

  • I used to have bags FULL of letters between me and my friends and boyfriends... remember when we used to fold them up all funky into little squares. I found them before I moved out and read so many of them. A good friend of mine is my ex and I shared "our lettes" with him (and our spouses) we had a good laugh.

I still have a penpal who I started writing to when I was 7 - she lived in australia, we met via expo '86 when they had a get a penpal compaign or something like that. We met for the first time in 200 when she came here for travels and I met her family in 2005 when I was in Australia for travels. She is still one of my closest friends. It's an amazing friendship. We progrossed from letters to tape recodings, to phone calls, email and now it's just like any other friend, we chat via fb/email when we have the time. She's in England now and planning to come over in November to meet the baby.

wow awesome story!!! I had 2-3 penpals through similar campaigns but it fizzled out after a few years. I do have one friend who coincidentally lives in Australia who I have only seen 3 times in the past 11 years and we just write (started out letters, e-mails now facebook).
  • I had tons of penpals over the years. Some I am still really good friends with. I had one for a few years that I never met. I was in PEI and I put a message in a bottle and threw it off of the ferry. Someone found it and wrote me a letter. That was pretty cool.

I don't think I kept anything from past boyfriends though. I know I cleaned out my closet at home years ago and found dried flowers from my highschool boyfriend. They smelled like pee so I got rid of everything.

LOL. Yeah it feels weird throwing it out but I know it's weird to keep them too... I am definitely not moving them to Ontario.. My parents can throw them out when they move into a condo!!!!

I am however moving my baseball bat and cleats to Ontario HAHAH they were exactly where I left them 9 years ago!!!

That is aweome! I'm totally going to do that when I'm the ferry next summer - conincidentatly enough when we go to PEI

  • Did you guys ever release balloons when you were in elementary school that had your contact info (at the school) so whomever found it could write you back?
  • We did! I don't remember anyone ever hearing anything though.
