For those of you who have travelled by air within the UK, what airline(s) did you use? We're trying to book cheap(er) flights from Heathrow to Dublin, and it seems like Aer Lingus is the cheapest, but I've heard they are pretty tight on their baggage allowance.
We are flying into Heathrow, spending a week in England with my family, then leaving for a week in Ireland.
I'm going to post this on the travel board too, just in case, but would really appreciate any insight from you ladies!
Cheers!
Re: Cheap UK Flights
Ugh. Heathrow. The stuff nightmares are made of and where bags go to die. Out of the 8 flights I've taken to Heathrow my bags have been lost 6 times. I've missed 3 connecting flights just due to lack of organization and sheer stupidity. Incredibly frustrating. (Thank goodness they made alternative arrangements for me, but it sure wasn't fun landing in Marrakech at 1 am rather than 6 pm with NO hotel reservations and no clue what I was doing as it was my first time there... also wasn't fun to have to call work from London saying I'd not be in the next day due to having to be re-routed to New York instead of directly to Vancouver. 13 hours of hell at JFK.)
I've flown with British Airways all of those times. The service on board is ok. But once you get to Heathrow it all goes down the toilet.
I don' t say this to scare you, I say it to warn you. Pack one heck of a good carry on, just in case. Have all the essentials in there. And bring your sense of humour and sense of adventure. You might need it. If you need neither of these? Buy a lottery ticket as you've come into an incredible streak of luck.
I've had better experiences at Gatwick, though. A couple of flights were delayed, but no issues with bags or missing flights.
You probably hate me now! lol. All the best, just the same.
We booked with Ryan Air, and the flight for both DH and I from Manchester to Dublin was about $125 CDN with all taxes etc. Ryan Air was super bare bones but the flight was so short that it wasn't a big deal.
I highly recommend staying in Temple Bar when you are in Dublin, it was where a lot of the night life was. We found a pretty decent hotel for a pretty good deal, but now I can't remember the name. Also as far as touring the city, we got a tour pass and that included transportation to and from the airport so we didn't have to take a cab or anything plus it brought to all of the main sights of the city. You can buy the pass at the airport.
This will be my millionth time going through Heathrow, and I've never had a problem (sorry you have had so many!). I'm actually from England, so have a decent grasp on the airports. Just have never flown between countries in the UK, as we usually drive/take the train. But seeing as we're leaving the "main land" this time, and I don't want to take the ferry, I need to sort out flights.
Thanks Trish! I'll take a look at Ryan Air.
We're staying in Co. Wexford, and will have a car rental, so we're not looking for accommodations. We'll probably just be doing a day trip to Dublin. This lag of the trip is the good old family vacay with Sean's family (
) so we don't have a ton of choice (they already booked the accommodation, etc.)
We've taken Ryan air. The only thing is that it flies out of Stanstead Airport.
I also beleive it is by far the cheapest
Ha. Hilarious. Sorry about my useless rant.
Why do I always go through hell there?
Hope you find some cheap flights!
Ah, Heathrow. When we flew through two years ago, we were in one of the old terminals and it was dismal; on my trans-Atlantic flights when I was a student in the UK, I always went through T3 or T4, so it was a shock at how run-down the older terminal was. Anyway, that was just before T5 opened, so we had no trouble with the luggage (thank heavens!). *But* if you haven't been through Heathrow lately, be warned that they are super-picky there about carry-ons. The airport's own regulations (2 years ago, at least) over-rode the airline's limits.
Anyway, I've never flown within the UK, but I remember friends taking EasyJet when I lived there. (Again, that was a looong time ago!) I've often heard of Ryanair.
Where are you going in Ireland? I *love* the Aran Islands!
ETA: When we booked our upcoming trip to Germany, we were asked if we'd mind connecting through Heathrow. I replied that I'd agree only if I got a stop-over in London each way, that that would be the only way that it would be worth it.
