mommies: opinions on cribs

There are so many cribs out there I have no idea where to start lol. What cribs do you have and what do you like/dislike about them. I want to start shopping for one and kinda don't know what I should be looking for.

 TIA

Re: mommies: opinions on cribs

  • We have two, because of moving around. Our 'real' crib (in Vancouver) is by Sorelle, has a drop-side and a bottom drawer and is as solid as can be. The crib we bought for Toronto and left at my parents' place (J is napping in it as I type) is from Ikea. There is no drop-side, which I'm not so fond of, but otherwise it is fine.

The one thing we decided early on is that we did *not* want a convertible crib. Now that we're expecting #2, I'm glad we didn't go for a convertible, because then we'd either need to buy another crib or have to get a regular bed and forget about the convertible aspect for the time being.

One feature I love about our crib at home is that the drop-side can be removed. We'll do this soon-ish, as a step towards moving to a big-boy bed.

We bought the Sorelle at a kids' specialty store. All the department stores and BRU seemed to carry only Storkcraft, and all the floor models in every store seemed wobbly. Maybe that's because they were floor models, but because of the wobbliness we ruled out Storkcraft very early on.

If you don't already have it, I highly recommend getting a copy of Baby Bargains. The latest edition is being published at the end of this month. There have been enough changes since we were shopping for baby stuff 3 years ago that I'm going to get the new edition before we start preparing for #2.

  • I second the baby bargains book - I found it to be an excellent resource.

I actually wanted more furniture style nursery furniture, and I wanted something that WAS convertible.  I have had no issues that there isn't a drop side, but i'm reasonable tall (5'7")

A lot depends on what you are looking to spend.

  • We have a crib by Munire, got it from Baby Worlds in Stoney Creek (yes it's called Baby Worlds - whereas it SHOULD be called Baby's World, but I digress).

It's a convertible crib that goes from infant crib to toddler bed to double bed. We love it. It's solid, sturdy, gorgeous and will last DD through her years growing up here (until she buys her own home one day, goes away to school, etc)

So far there is nothing I dislike about it. I highly recommend it, actually!

LOL, that would drive me nuts!

BTW, I'm 5'8", and nevertheless prefer drop-sides. It is totally a personal preference, though. Try both and see what works for you.

  • I have a Munire too!
  • I have a sleigh style with the drop down side. I bought it from Once Upon a Child, brand new, which is a great place to check out. It is an AP Industries crib. It converts to a toddler bed, which is how we are using currently using the bed.

I think the sleigh top helped DD climb out sooner than she would have with a different kind of crib. The ends that jut upward gave her something to hold onto as she straddled the top rail.

I'm short too, so I liked the the side dropped down. If I could buy all over again, I would go for the low to the ground crib, that is square and boxy looking.

  • We have a convertible crib.  I hate that the sides do not come down.  When I was pregnant with #2 I found it so hard to get #1 in the crib.  Also, we had to move #2 in a 'big boy' bed a little sooner than I would have liked, but like pp mentioned, I was not going to spend that amount of money on another crib.

Now that #2 is here we will be using the crib for his bed.
