I was in the office working and then noticed it was a little too quiet. Usually when that happens, he's snuck upstairs and is playing in his room.
As I start to go upstairs, i notice that the kitchen door to the backyard is wide open. So, I look out and see David sitting in our vegetable garden playing in the mudd. All you Chicago girls know how much rain fell today. Once he saw me, he got up and started running away from me. Luckily he had shoes on but he was still covered in mudd.
I always have the door locked but got distracted when the dog wouldn't go outside and just didn't re-lock it.
I need him on a leash.
Re: So David just Escaped
I personally am FOR those kiddie leashes. It used to be kind of cruel, but the more I think about it, the more it's less because you struggle to keep an eye on your kid and more because there are a lot of crazy SOBs out there.

I disagree, I dont think they are funny at all. Parents who use these should be ashamed of themselves.
Melanie, I feel for you since I know how much mud there must be in your yard and garden. He must have gotten a bath right away, huh?
they are a little more descrete these days, they are a backpack and aren't tied the wrist like the ones from way back.
DH is hell beant against them. His rational is that the kid will listen to me. However, it takes 1 second for the kid to get distracted and go off somewhere else. Not only that, I'd be afraid of the crazy people wanting to steal my cute little David.
I'm afraid of the day when he learns how to unlock the doors. Right now, he just knows how to turn the handle to get the door open. When that day comes, we may need to put the hook locks way above where he can reach.
This is why I'm not against them. And they're just like harnesses now. At least if my kid's on a harness attached to my wrist, I'll know if someone tries to nab him/her. I'm not saying EVERYONE should use them or it's the best thing since sliced bread. I just think they definitely have a good use now more than ever.
He's at a tough age where they want to wander everywhere. I'm so glad he's ok!
It's cool. We just have different views on it.
Anyways, sliced bread isn't really all that great.

I'm glad he only got out into the back yard. And I can imagine when he saw the look on your face he knew he was in big trouble which is why he started running away.
I think you're right that you'll need those chain locks put way high when David learns to start unlocking doors.
I'm so glad he is ok.
There was actually a debate on my local nest board about the kiddie leashes. It seemed like a lot of people use them at places like Disney World, the boardwalk. There were some people who had more than 1 child and use them to keep track/hold onto the older one. And then there were some people who were vehemently against them. I am on the fence. I figure I can't make a decision until I am in that situation. A lot of people admitted saying they would never use them before they had kids. And then it changed once kids came along.
