hello! name change question...

Hello Nesties!

I am about to start the dreaded name change process....however, my google skills are apparently lacking today and I cannot seem to find the instructions for what you need to do. Can anyone help, with either notes or a link?

Thanks!!!

Re: hello! name change question...

  • Haven't gone to SS yet, but the DMV only needed the usual "6points" plus a certified marriage certificate.
  • I believe you can find the form on the social security website.  Download it, complete it, and you need to take it with you to the office, along with your marriage license.  You may want to go to the SS office that's closest to your home because when I went, I found out that you're supposed to do that apparently.  I was let go because I worked close to the office in Cherry Hill.  But be prepared to wait at least an hour and the people there are scary!

I went to social security first and then to the DMV.  But I came to find out that I could have went to the DMV first.  The name change process, for me, was pretty easy.
  • Thank you so much! That all sounds easy enough. Also, thanks for the warnings....:)

Hmm...I went to the one in center city bc it is closest to my work and they didnt say anything.  You can also make an appt ahead of time, I believe, which may cut down on time.  I agree that it was scary there...

If it helps, I did my name change in the following order:

    -SS

    -DMV

-Bank (make sure you have your new drivers lic and cert. copy of marriage cert)

-Credit cards (most let me change over the phone with no documentation)

    -passport

  • ditto Krista... except the center city part. I went to SS in Mount Holly. It actually wasn't busy.

Also, when at the DMV change your car registration too- not just your DL.

  • Everyone already gave great advice on SS & drivers license so I'll throw in the passport info since that's my job, lol.

To get a passport in your married name all you have to do is be identified @ the acceptance office with a driver's license in your married name and answer the "are you married" question with your husbands info. If you do it this way we don't need a marriage license.

Alternatively, if you already have a fully valid 10 yr passport (that was issued after you turned 16) that has not been expired for more than 5 years, you can mail in the signed passport renewal application (signed in your married name), fees, and your marriage cert (with the raised seal, not a copy) and we can issue the passport in your married name without seeing any ID in your married name.

    GL!

  • Thank you all so much! The detailed info is great. I have taken lots of notes :)

  • Make sure when you go to the DMV for your license you also change your registration.  You'll need this to change your car loan if you have one.

I added what I did to my wedding page:
