jury duty

I posted in my blog about my experience with jury duty this week.  Just to warn you it is a bit long...sorry!  But if you are interested...have fun reading!  If you have any questions about jury duty, I would be happy to answer them.  I had a great experience with it.

Re: jury duty

  • Sounds fun! I did a slip and fall liability case a few years ago.  I wouldn't mind doing civil court again but there is no way I'd want to do anything criminal where people would be serving jail time. I don't think I could do that.
  • I'm glad it went well!

They were pooling for both civil and criminal this week.  I never got pooled for a civil just the criminal I got picked for and the one before that was also criminal.

It was really stressful to think that these people's fate was in our hands.  I think they jury I was on as a whole did a great job of not letting our emotions for the case drive the facts of the case.  Personally I think this couple did commit insurance fraud but the prosecution did not prove their case and given the facts and evidence we had...we had to rule not guilty because there was a reasonable amount of doubt.

And I think that you would do fine on a jury as long as you remember that the defendants are always innocent until proven guilty and that it is the job of the prosecuter to prove the facts.  I took the advice of the judge and did not consider any witness's testimony until we walked into the deliberation room.  I sat and listened and never took a complete judgement until I was instructed to do so.  One thing the judge told us was to not consider what type of sentence the defendants could be facing if they were found guilty.  I also did not let the fact that if found not guilty, they would probably get a settlement from the insurance company.  Those things did not matter when it came to deciding whether or not there was reasonable doubt as to the facts.  It was hard to that at times but I had 11 other people there to make sure I was doing my job correctly.
