Maybe this shouldn't annoy me, but it does (long)

We bought a(nother) Diaper Genie when we lived in Toronto, and left it at my parents' for whenever we visit. My mother asked whether we could loan it to their neighbours for their newest grandkid. I said that was fine, particularly because they'd loaned my parents a handmade wooden rocking horse for Jakob to play with. I assumed that it would stay at the neighbours' house for when said grandbaby came to visit.

Anyway, skip ahead to this past Monday. My husband asks what to do with a used diaper. That's when we remembered that the Diaper Genie had been loaned out. I asked my Mom about it, and she said that she tried calling the neighbours but the grandmother was out when she called. I don't know why she didn't leave a message, but she didn't. Then she said that the grandmother babysits on Thursdays, so she'd call to ask her to bring the Diaper Genie back. Huh? Ok, so it isn't next door afterall. Fine.

She and I were out with Jakob all day, my stepdad was home. When we got back, the Diaper Genie was here. Good! Jakob's been here for 11 days already, we left it here so it could be used whenever we were here, but whatever, at least we have it back now.

They took the refill (plastic liner thingy) out before returning it. I'm fairly certain that we didn't happen to finish off the refill completely *just* as we left to move back, and since there's no spare (full or partially used) here, I'm certain it was loaned out with at least *some* use left in the refill.

Because my parents' house is in the boonies, it isn't like we can just run out to the nearest corner store to buy another. Probably the nearest store that would sell them is a 20 minute drive away. Which means we'll get one tomorrow, and will get only about 5 days use out of this thing even though Jakob will have been here for the better part of 3 weeks.

What annoys me is just that the people who had free use of our Diaper Genie for nearly a year couldn't be bothered to include the refill when they returned it. I've told my Mom not to give it back to them (obviously, we'll need it again when we come back next year, otherwise I'd probably just give it away), so they'll either have to buy their own now or they'll be stuck with the refills anyway.

There's not much point to this post, I just want to vent about it.

Re: Maybe this shouldn't annoy me, but it does (long)

  • It would annoy me too.  Even if you had given it without the refill I would have given you the one I bought as a kind of thanks.  Like if I borrow someone's car and get it with half a tank, I'll return it full since that meant I didn't have to pay to rent one and you saved me money.

I'd probably tell your mom you don't want it to be lent out again so it's there when you need it next time and you'll know it has everything you need - like the liners.  Otherwise she may assume if you were fine with it once you will be fine with it forever.

  • Some people are so odd!  Once when I was visiting my aunt, a neighbour stopped buy and asked if she could borrow a pack of birthday candles (you know, like the kind that cost $1 for a pack).  Anyhow, later that afternoon, after the birthday party, she came back to return the candles.  She actually brought back the USED candles!  They were just little stubs!  That happened close on twenty years ago and my mom and I still tell the story every now and then for a chuckle!

  • that's so rude...

That's like borrowing someone's car and giving it back with an empty tank.

  • Thanks for the reassurance. I wasn't sure whether it was reasonable to be irritated, or whether I was just being all preggie and hormonal and irrational.

That said, I have told my mother that I don't want it loaned out again. I was happy to loan it out before (like I said, the neighbours had loaned us their handmade wooden rocking horse), but it just really bugs me that they returned it without including a refill.

I know!  Could you imagine?  That lady has no idea that she is the topic of a long time running joke in our family.  lol

  • It would probably bother me too, but just to play devil's advocate, maybe they were caught off gaurd when they were asked to return it and didn't have time to pick up some refills?

Anyway, glad you got it back Smile

Hm, good point! Although if they didn't have a refill, then they weren't able to use it anyway.
