Anyone ever been to one?
I'm going tomorrow and they are supposed to test me for what I'm allergic to and then give me small doses of said allergens so I build up a tolerance to them...and then never have allergies again!?
Anyone does this and doe it work?
Re: Allergy Doc's...
I went to an allergy doc when I was in high school... I still have allergies. ?Boo. ?
He did a "back scratch test" where he scratched a bunch of different allergens into my back. ?I had just gotten a cat, and I was afraid that I was allergic to her... ?the doc came back in and looked at my back and goes "the good news is, you aren't allergic to your cat. ?the bad news is, you are allergic to the state of Texas." ?LOL?
oh fun - the joys of allergy shots!!
I do two shots a week - I think they are working my hay fever wasn't very bad this past Spring
I hate the testing - hate it. I made me a little sick and my arms were sore for a day afterwards. But I think I got sick because I had some very strong reactions apparently I am allergic to the world in general
If this traditional western medicine approach to allergies doesn't work for you, might I suggest seeing a practitioner that is certified in NAET. It's an allergy elimination technique that actually works (which means that, of course, it's not covered by insurance). It's a combination of eastern medicine, spinal compressions, and accupuncture (or accupressure if you can't do needles). Last time I had it done it was about $75 for the intial muscle testing and another $50-$75 for each session (allergens must be eliminated one at a time). It was totally worth it! I haven't had allergies in 4 years!
I personally recommend Joan Gregory in Arlington. Her contact info is in my nest bio on the "recommended businesses" page. But if she's not close enough for you, you can go to www.naet.com to read more about the treatment and locate a practitioner near you.
I passed out at my test. She didn't really warn me of what she was going to do and then basically started to give me little shots one at a time in my back. They did a total of around 100, but I passed out at about 20! They had me lay down for the rest of it (which we should have done from the beginning!)
?They will make a little cocktail of what you're allergic to and give you the shot - but it's not a one time quick fix. You have to KEEP taking the shots once a week or so if you want them to stay away. And your allergies are like anything else, they adapt and change with the environment so you'll have to retest and have your dosage/mix adjusted frequently.
?I decided not to do the shots. My allergies are pretty severe for about a month, but I just couldn't do the shots every week all year for that one month. But I know many people who couldn't function without them!?
My allergist doesn't do allergy testing by the little shots in your back anymore. He says they aren't accurate enough. It's all done through a simple blood test. I didn't know anyone still did it the old way?
I've done allergy shots, never saw much difference and they were pricey. Honestly, I am allergic to everything and stay fairly miserable so I've given up.
