Mommies: ? for you (kind of long)

D went to bed last night at 8pm (as usual) and then at 3:30am, she woke up whining. When she couldn't soothe herself, she resorted to screaming. I found that she had soaked herself, so I went to change her, and she screamed the whole time.

Then when she went back down, she tried her best to go back to sleep, but then after about 45 minutes of almost making it to slumberland, she started wailing. I picked her up, nursed her and she fell asleep. I put her down.

About an hour later, she was up, freaking out. I tried to console her and it took a while, but she calmed down and would only go to bed with me. (this is not like her)

She woke up this morning, next to me, screaming. I get up, scoop her up and I try everything to soothe her. I took her for a diaper change - kid screamed the whole time, and looked at me with squinty eyes.

After I get a good look, her nose is running, and her left eye is running (no yellow or pus, so I know it's not pink eye). No fever. Definitely upset, and tired. Wants to suck her thumb and sleep but keeps rubbing her one eye and spitting drool out at me (like raspberries - she just learned this trick).

Could it be teething? She's been chomping on things and drooling and having red cheeks for MONTHS, but this is different. I know the sinal nerve runs right up the face, so it could be, but I dunno. We did go for a walk after supper last night and the pollens were floating all over - could it be allergies? But would allergies have her that miserable that she cries when I lay her flat?

I gave her some Motrin b/c she was really off and not happy. She played happily for short periods. Her left eye is looking better, but at times she rubs it and it runs. The Motrin seems to have kicked in, b/c she allowed me to lay her down to sleep.

Any ideas? Teething? Allergies? what could it be?
I was going to start cereal with her today, but am thinking maybe I should hold off if she's getting sick (yet no fever). If she's compliant, I may try cereal at lunch. What would you do?

Re: Mommies: ? for you (kind of long)

  • Sounds like teething to me.  If she doesn't have a fever and things don't get any worse, that's what I'd chalk it up to.  As far as the cereal goes, i'd say give it a try today at lunch - it'll be mostly water anyway since it's your first go - and see how she reacts.

Just to give you a point of reference, Annora throws up when she's hard core teething.  I've realized that she doesn't get a diaper "teething" rash, she doesn't get a cold, but she will choke on her food and barf everything up all over herself.  She did this for about a week and then out popped a tooth.  Her second tooth came about a week later and she had been throwing up for a few days before the second one popped.  We think she may have popped her third on the top but she won't let us look, and a big signal to us was that she started throwing up her lunch again.  So it could very well be that Dani's teething "thing" is to get congested or get runny eyes.  The screaming for no reason sounds a LOT like the nights I had with Annora right before her teeth popped out.

My first instinct is that she's fine... everybody's entitled to an off-night, including babies.  If things don't get better in a few days and there aren't any teeth then take her to the doctor, but for right now it kinda sounds like it's par for the course with having a baby.  :)

  • Yikes!!!  I'm not sure....I hope she is feeling better.

Is today her first solids (or did you start with something else first?)  Let us know how it goes (with the solids and with the sick baby!)

  • Thanks Chantal, you know how paranoid I get!

I hate seeing her so distressed. :(

I hope she cuts a tooth soon so that she can get back to being my sweet poopiehead.

Yeah, we were going to start her on rice ceral today - Organic Brown Rice cereal. I was really excited to start (it's kind of bittersweet to move onto solids, isn't it?), and then when she woke up like this, I was like 'not doing it'

But now she's had about an hour nap, the Motrin has calmed her down, she's smiling, laughing and playing. So I think it must be teething related. Her one eye is kind of pink, but that's from rubbing it. When I opened the door to outside, it started running a bit again, so maybe it's allergies on top of teething or aggravated by teething. Who knows.

I'm going to try the cereal at lunch! Exciting!

  • Do you find that she is crying more when she is laying down as opposed to when she is sitting up or being held?

Usually teething babies cry a lot more when laying down b/c the blood tends to pump harder to the head when they are laying down, therefore causing more pain.  When DS was teething, we would put him down for naps in his swing or we would use a wedge under his mattress n order to elevate his head a bit.  This seemed to really help a lot.

As for starting solids, I personally would wait until Dani is feeling better.

  • I would bet that if the motrin and a nap helped, it's teething.

I would also wait with the solids...only because you'd hate to have to decide...is her second rough night also because of solids (if that makes sense).  I always thinks it's better to start with a 'clean slate'.

    GL, and keep us updated!

  • Honestly, it doesn't sound like teething to me and I would get her to a pedi soon if things don't improve. Alex has had pink eye twice where his eye wasn't pink AT ALL, and so has my niece when she was jut one month old. It seems like it's itchy, plus it's only one eye, so that wouldn't be allergies.
