Visiting the area, questions.

DH and I will be in Lake Forest for a week in July. He will be at work all week so that leaves me with a rental car and a lot of free time. Any suggestions on what I should fill it with? Any good restaurants and shops in the area? I like museums and the beach too. I'm willing to drive like an hour away to see stuff (will be making a trip to LA). But most of the time I want to stay locally around like Lake Forest, Laguna and Irvine. Any recommendations to anything would be appreciated. Thanks! Oh also is there any good nightlife in the area (not driving to LA)?

Re: Visiting the area, questions.

  • If you like malls, go to the Spectrum mall in Irvine.  It's an outdoor mall with Pinkberry, etc.  It's a nice place to spend some time outside.
  • Huntington Pier

Downtown Disney (I think parking is $7, but no entry fee)

    South Coast Plaza

    Fashion Island

    Bowers Museum of Cultural Art

Balboa Island, Newport Beach & Corona del Mar

Laguna Beach (there are a lot of galleries and cute restaurants)

Marukai Japanese Market in Costa Mesa

  • Oh, and stay off the 405 freeway between 8am-10am and 5pm-7pm. It can be a nightmare if you're not used to sitting in traffic.
  • san clemente is also a cute little beach town just south of lake forest.

  • If you was to drive to LA, to avoid major traffic, you may want to drive during the hours of 10am - 2pm.

I dunno that there is really anytime you can avoid traffic in LA Tongue Tied

I second Laguna - it's close and has great restaurants, art galleries and a nice beach, albeit crowded. I also recommend heading to Costa Mesa for the Camp and the Lab, as well as he art distrct of Santa Ana and Old Town Orange

  • In Huntington Beach we have a farmer's market and arts and craft market every friday from noon till 7pm at the Pier. You could hit the beach and shop :-)

My bff is from Bothell. Small world! Love it there...so lush and green.
